Locate the Sphinx: Mountain Shrine

To start this quest, you first need to locate the Sphinx. Ideally, you will travel from Checkpoint Rest Town, found on the western side of the map. Then, follow the outlined path in the image below. You will travel to the Northern area and pass through the Ancient Battleground, an open area below the first entry point, Worldsend Cavern. A large portion of this area is a castle rubble that will lead to the entrance of the Worldsend Cavern. From there, follow the newly revealed path that will take you to the Shrine Corridor. You will find the entrance to the Mountain Shrine directly on top by the other side using the stairs. The legendary Sphinx is waiting for you at the top.

Answer the Sphinx's Riddles (Part 1)

NOTE: You're only given 1 try to answer per riddle. If you give the Sphinx a wrong answer, it will lock you out from earning the trophy from that playthrough and the Sphinx will abandon your game. You will have to redo your progress on another playthrough. It is highly recommended to create save files or backups before you approach the Sphinx to answer. This way, you are guaranteeing a second chance for yourself if you happen to give the wrong answer.

This section is dedicated to all the riddles from the Sphinx at her first location in Mountain Shrine

Sphinx Riddle #1: The Riddle of Eyes DD2

“Our eyes are our allies, yet oft do they betray, for eyes tell lies, so I advise, and thence do lead astray. Yet how will your eyes advise you? Venture through yonder door, and retrieve that which of greatest value.”

After getting the first Riddle from the Sphinx, you will be told to travel to a cave and look for the item that you think is of the greatest value. Inside this cave, you will navigate traps, defeat goblins, and possibly encounter an ogre. There are also treasure chests within the cave where you can get valuable items from.

One of the treasure chests can be located right above the door when you enter the cave, inside the chest is a Sealing Phial, this is the item that you will have to give to the Sphinx. To reach the chest, there is a path going up to the left if you're facing the door. You will be rewarded with a Wakestone upon completing the riddle.

NOTE: If you consume the Sealing Phial, you will not be able to solve this riddle.

Sphinx Riddle #2: The Riddle of Madness DD2

"Love is as twin to madness, they say. They are bound fast as night is to day. So bring forth your most beloved one to me, that I might gauge the depth of your insanity."

After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, you will have to bring someone who is your most beloved which is a character you have romanced. For the simplest solution, your Main Pawn can be picked up, placed upon the pedestal, and used as your answer to the riddle, which is completely accepted by the Sphinx. If you wish to bring your true beloved, you can use the Sealing Phial which allows you to pick up and pocket a character in your inventory and then let them out by the Sphinx. Another option is to carry the character, and use a Ferrystone whilst they are in your arms, if you have placed a Portcrystal near the Sphinx.

Ulrika is confirmed to work on this riddle if you have romanced her. Glyndwr as well, regardless of gender. So long as the NPC blushes when spoken to, they have enough Affinity to be romanced. If you bring more than one person you have romanced, you will still complete the riddle. However, they will begin to kill each other until only your true love remains. You will be rewarded with a Portcrystal upon completing the riddle.

Sphinx Riddle #3: The Riddle of Wisdom DD2

"The parent knows the child, yet the reverse is far from true. The child knows not the parent: such is the parent's due. I am a lost child; for kinship do I yearn. So bring to me my "Parent". that might better learn."

After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, you will have to enter the rift and find a pawn called "SphinxFather" who is a Capcom-made pawn for you. Bring him to the Sphinx to complete the riddle, you will also be rewarded with 1200 RC for completing this riddle.

  • NOTE: When at a riftstone, select "View Linked Riftstones" and select "Riftstone of Fellowship" there you'll find either a Father, Mother, or Parent you can use.
  • Any pawn named "SphinxFather" will work, you do not have to use an official Capcom pawn.

Sphinx Riddle #4: The Riddle of Conviction DD2

"Life is an enigma – a lender of mortal debt. Yet lighter pack makes fleeter foot and challenge nimbly met. So grant to me what you most prize, and thence elude your pondrous demise."

After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, you can give any item to the Sphinx and it will act as if it will not return it to you. When actually, it will duplicate the item it will give you as a reward.

NOTE: Giving a Portcrystal to the Sphinx here can be useful in the early parts of the game. One can also give the Jadeite Orb to the Sphinx to give Everard and Offulve the genuine treasure to complete the QuestHunt for the Jadeite Orb, this way they don't have to use forgeries and can save the small forgery fee.

Sphinx Riddle #5: The Riddle of Rumination DD2

"It's ever the first we keep fond in our breast, and ever the first that eclipses the rest. You know of the Seeker's Tokens, I trust? Those keepsakes of a fondly remembered journey? Yet where was it that you found your first? Retrace your steps, if you can – you might make a new discovery. Seven days, shall we say, ere you return? May your journey be a pleasant one."

After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, you will have to go back to the place where you picked up your first Seeker's Token. The Finder's Token will be laying on the ground there. If you start a New Game Plus, it will be where the first Seeker's Token you picked up in that New Game Plus was. If you haven't collected any Seeker's Token's yet, it has been reported that it will appear next to the next Seeker's Token you pick up. If you've already collected all Seeker's Token's in a previous game, it has been reported that the Finder's Token will appear right at your feet in front of the Sphinx when you begin the riddle.

Once you obtain it, head back to the Sphinx and present the item to it. You will be rewarded with a chest filled with 3x Ferrystones.

Find Sphinx's Second Location: Frontier Shrine

After completing all 5 Riddles, the Sphinx will go to her second location in Frontier Shrine. You need to find her again to continue playing the rest of the riddles. If you can manage it, you can climb on the back of the Sphinx just as she leaves so you can get a free ride to its second location. This can require a great amount of stamina, but you can let go once on its back and stand on top of it, rather than drain your stamina until you inevitably fall off. Simply watch out once it enters the cave; it will began to bank upwards, and you'll need to grab on for a good while, or fall off.

Alternatively, you can go to the second location by following the river below the Checkpoint Rest Town and follow it to the west. This will lead you directly to the entrance of the Frontier Shrine

Answer the Sphinx's Riddles (Part 2)

This section is dedicated to all the riddles from the Sphinx at her second location in Frontier Shrine.

Sphinx Riddle #6: The Riddle of Reunion DD2

This riddle is solved automatically upon finding the Sphinx in its second location. There will be a chest on the left side that you can open and you will be rewarded with 100,000 Gold.

Sphinx Riddle #7: The Riddle of Recollection DD2

"Now, questions beget questions, and I have one for you. How many riddles have you solved thus far? My memory fails me, you see. Remind me, and make it plain. Let yonder statues be your means. For every question aptly answered, bring one here before me.”

After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, a set of stone statues will appear to your left. What you will need to do is count how many riddles you've been given by the Sphinx so far, whether you answered them correctly or not. It has been reported that this number corresponds to the number of glowing eyes on her wings. Then, move the same number of statues onto or next to the dais in front the Sphinx. You will be rewarded with an Unmaking Arrow upon completing this riddle.

NOTE: The order for riddles 6-10 may be randomized, so you might get this riddle later on in the game.

Sphinx Riddle #8: The Riddle of Contest DD2

“Though ours is a battle of wits, tests of mettle are more to your strength. Is that not so? Come, try your arm – though he shall be your opponent, not I. However, I am not one to be amused by a simple duel. Bear this ring into battle, that I might gauge your true strength.”

After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, an enemy will spawn on the right. You will have to defeat this enemy to complete the riddle. However, as the sphinx forces you to wear the Ring of Derision, which causes all attacks to deal 1 damage, it will be substantially faster to simply pick up the enemy and throw them off the cliff. You will be rewarded the Ring of Ambition upon completing this riddle.

Sphinx Riddle #9: The Riddle of Futility DD2

“How easily the mind unravels! Some say it’s pain that does it best, others darkness – but I say neither. Rather, I say a mind cannot be more soundly broken than when it beholds its earnest efforts laid low in a single stroke. Could your survive such despair? We shall see. Here I have an amphora destine for Ser Maurits in Battahl. Deliver it to him, but beware; it’s rather fragile.”

After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, it will give you a vase that you will have to bring to a location called Mural Byway [See DD2 Map] without breaking it. Upon reaching it, there will be an NPC next to a Sphinx mural that will talk to you and you will automatically put down the vase after speaking with them. Return to the Sphinx to complete the riddle and claim the Eternal Bond Ring as your reward.

While the player can attempt to physically carry the amphora across the map without being hit a single time, an alternative way of solving the quest is to work smarter, not harder. You cannot use a Ferrystone with the amphora in hand, but as you likely know by now, you CAN use a Ferrystone with an NPC over your shoulder. Instead of carrying the vase, carry the quest NPC from Mural Byway (there is only one) and use a Ferrystone to teleport to a Portcrystal you've placed at the Frontier Shrine. The NPC has unique dialogue explicitly referencing the fact that you brought them there, and that you must have done so because the amphora was hidden there, which indicates that the developers likely intended this to be the solution.

NOTE: You will fail to complete the riddle if you break the vase so to prevent that, you can make a save file before going to the Sphinx for its riddles.

Sphinx Riddle #10: The Riddle of Differentiation DD2

“So vast is the world, and full of life; you are but one of many. Indeed, in the grand scheme, we are as distinct from one another as pebbles on a beach – yet we do so love to extol our differences. But are these differences so great? If you believe so, this next task should prove exceedingly simple. I seek this man. If men are so distinct, I’m sure you’ll find him in a trice.”

After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, you will have to find a specific NPC, either Dante or Vergil, these 2 NPCs look alike but are found in different towns just wandering around.

Dante has straight hair and his scar goes downward from his right eyebrow down below his eye and can be located in Checkpoint Rest Town, on the Vermund side of the border. Vergil has curly hair and he has more scars on his right eye that go down sideways and can be located in Checkpoint Rest Town on the Battahl side of the border.

Once you find the needed NPC, you can carry them if you're a fighter, warrior, or thief vocation back to the Sphinx. Another method is to place a Portcrystal at the Sphinx and then teleport back while carrying the NPC with a Ferrystone. You will be rewarded with a Whimsical Daydream.

NOTE: Make sure to have a save file before starting this riddle in case you are not sure if it is Dante or Vergil that you need.

Defeat the Sphinx

After completing all 10 Riddles, your next objective is to defeat the Sphinx. Initiate the fight by attacking the Sphinx and it will reveal having 4 Health Bars. Upon defeat, A Game of Wits will be marked as completed and the Sphinx will try to fly away. Make sure to shoot it down to earn gold rewards and obtain the Key of Sagacity which is used to unlock the huge golden chest of the Sphinx. The chest contains an Eternal Wakestone which will let you revive the dead in a certain area at once.

  • Fighting the Sphinx itself is a riddle and requires the player to focus on the non-human parts.
  • Hit the Sphinx only on the animal parts so it won't fly away.
  • You can defeat the Sphinx without using the Unmaking Arrow but you have to take this fight alone.
  • Pawns are unable to control where they land their attacks so it is recommended to keep them out of the fight. Use the command "Wait" to do this.
  • The clue to how you can fight the Sphinx can be found on the mural and the vase during Riddle of Futility (or #9 of this guide)

NOTE: The sphinx has a tendency to fly off mid-fight, so the easiest way to guarantee a victory is to use the unmaking arrow you obtained from the Riddle of Recollection (or #7 of this guide)

Breaking News: it is possible to get kill credit for the sphinx without her ever flying away.

Vocation: Warfarer. Equipped bow and daggers. Used only daggers' basic attack - and only on her hindquarters. Commanded pawns to wait; mage pawn still healed.

When Sphinx's health bar reached zero, she said some approving things and then dissolved into golden sparkles. She never tried to fly away, and I got credit for "killing" her.

      Hope it helps. :)

      • Anonymous

Correction: Any vocation can carry people.

Some vocations allow one to carry a person while weapons are out. The other vocations, one needs to sheathe (put away) the weapons before picking up and carrying anyone.

In either case, carrying a person and using a ferrystone to port back to the Sphinx is possible. Simply to place a portcrystal near the Sphinx's shrine. Otherwise, it's a nuisance - because one must pick the person up again every time they wriggle free.

With that said, you might want to use up the sealing vial to move one of the "answer" people. After obtaining the vial, one cannot put it into storage - it's stuck in inventory, with its weight added. So probably best to use the vial for one, and then carry the other(s).

        Happy gaming. :)

awful game design throughout. just the worst mechanics, so easy to fail at so many points, so much traipsing around the map. If you do everything right at the end she just flies off if you don't attack her... who the **** made this? have they ever played a game before?

          • Anonymous

You can reach to mountain shirne from the top of misty marsh, there is a camp fire and harpy on the top, just jump down and reach to sphinx without fighting any monster.

            • The game got slick with me. Riddle of collection was my last riddle, so I had to quickly get the unmaking arrow from the chest and had to shoot her as she was flying away. It was a lucky shot too.

What an awesome quest. Glad I remembered where I got my first token lol. Only thing I had to look up was the location of the second shrine, I didn't even think about jumping on her when she left.

Sphinx Riddle #9: the vase may despawn and thus make quest progress impossible since the vase wasn't broken.

                    • Anonymous

Fair warning, if you intend to use the unmaking arrow on the sphinx, trigger the fight with a normal arrow or attack first, and wait to use it only once the actual "bossfight" has started. Silly me thought I could trust that shotting anything in the game with the most powerful one shot arrow in existence would simply kill it outright, but the sphinx shrugged it off like it was nothing, and after all the work I put in am now locked out of getting the eternal wakestone. This game is fantastic, but that is some ****ing bullshit game design right there. Idk how developers who can put so much thought into small areas could overlook this. I am now out the quest rewards and the unmaking arrow, thanks a bunch capcom.

Sphinx Riddle #5: The Riddle of Rumination in NG+
In the first run (NG) I found 233 tokens, in NG+ the very first woman from NG was not there (I filled out this place and screened it), the only solution was to find 234 tokens in NG+, then take the riddle from Sphinx and go to that place , where I found 234 token, after that I made a copy of Finder's Token in Ibrahim's Scrap Shop, it is identical, I hope it will be suitable for the next NG++, because there is no desire to look for 235.

Sphinx Riddle #5 The Riddle of Rumination: I never turned anything in on NG+ and she accepted that anyway so you don't have to find it if you don't know which you picked up.
Sphinx Riddle #7 The Riddle of Recollection: Poorly translated. It's asking for how many riddles she's given you so far, not how many you've answered correctly. The statues don't have to be ON the little platform, just right next to it/up against it was enough. They CAN be stacked.
Sphinx Riddle #9 The Riddle of Futility: You don't even need to touch the vase, grab the NPC and ferrystone over. Set him down right next to it and they'll talk about the vase and leave with it.
Defeat the Sphinx: To equip the Unmaking Arrow, you need to have a regular bow. So you either need to be an archer or wayfarer and have a REGULAR BOW that isn't magic enhanced to be able to use it. Aim for the body from the side.

Sphinx Riddle #5: The Riddle of Rumination in NG+ is the first one you find in NG+.

(No idea if you found them all in previous one, i didn't.)

for Sphinx Riddle #4: The Riddle of Conviction
i advise you give her Portcrystal
you can pay a small forgery fee for Jadeite Orb and give the forged one to Offulve and give the real one to Everard because giving forged one to Offulve has no demerit.
Portcrystal is worthy more than the reward of that quest anyway lol

                              • Riddle #5: The riddle to find the Finder's Token

So long as you do not talk to the Sphinx without it after 7 days have passed, you have unlimited time to find it. The quest only fails IF you talk to her after 7 days and you do not have one in your inventory. You can wait 20 days, then talk to her with one in your inventory, and you'll get the same dialogue and rewards that you get when you do it within 7 days. This is because this quest isn't treated like other timed quests. There's no hourglass icon on the quest list.

                                • Anonymous

Note, if you are trying to use the unmaking arrow, you have to wait until she tries to fly off after fighting you. If you use it right away, it won't work, and she'll fly away.

                                  • Anonymous

so for people who didn't know, you can jump on her after you finish the first 5 quest, and she'll take you all the way to the second shrine. Obviously you should have a spare portcrystal, since you need to port back to get the last reward.

                                    • Anonymous

This quest is bugged: after reading the comments on the wiki here, I decided to give her the answer how many questions I ANSWERED (same as the number of glowing eyes on the wings) since I couldn’t find my first token anymore it differed from the correctly answered number. She ****ed me over nonetheless so I reloaded my last Inn save not realising it was a bit back, came back and the order had changed, still I answered with the number of the correctly answered questions (first time it was the 7th riddle this time the 10th so I answered 9) and it was still wrong? Wtf? So when you get 1 „wrong“ it seems you’re ****ed either way. Btw this was a nice idea and I like the look and the behaviour of the spinx but finding your first seeker token is just plain dumb ****. I’m not spending days looking for that **** just bc I decided not to read a complete walkthrough before playing this game

A note for the Sphinx Riddle #4: The Riddle of Conviction:

If you use an armor/weapon to dupe, the dupe DOES NOT retain any upgrades. Confirmed with a WC upgraded Charming Corset. It gave me mine back fully upgraded, but the dupe is un-upgraded.

Interesting but the answer to how to kill her is the picture on the amfora you shold bring to the bakbatal, it show the spears attaking her beast back and her human part is surrounding in some kind of an aura, and maybe those mural in the bakbatal on which you should rely on as that npc says tells you that you should fight her anyway

You have to shoot her to start the fight with her ?! I thought she initiated the fight after you solved tye riddles.

SHE FLIES OFF. Don't let her if you want the final chest reward

                                                /ˈrɪdl/
                                                noun
a question or statement intentionally phrased so as to require ingenuity in ascertaining its answer or meaning.

Not one single task that she sets for us is an actual riddle. I was overthinking the questions under the impression that they were actual riddles, but no - when she asks you to bring her the most valuable item from a cave, literally just bring her the most valuable item. When she asks you to bring your beloved to her, it literally just means to bring her your beloved.

Oh, and when she asks how many questions you've answered correctly so far what she actually means is how many questions has she ASKED so far. If you failed to find the finder's token and get this question as your final "riddle", the answer is still 9 even though it should be 8.

Such a shame to waste the awesome Sphinx design on this dumb, ferrystone wasting quest.

Just a note. Reaching frontier shrine before mountain shrine will not start quest (at least in my playthrough).

It's a moot point seeing as you can use your main pawn but anyone with a high affection will work I think. I brought Ibrahim (the forgery fella) to her with maxed affection and it worked.

Would be wise to rename your own pawn to either SphinxFather, SphinxMother or SphinxParent if you have to do a new game + anyway

Trickster perk "Detection" will alert you to the presence of the finder's token if you are having trouble finding it

I did not ****ing notice that finding her again counts as a riddle... My last inn save has been ages ago so I ****ed it until NG+

                                                            some tips for this:

The Riddle of Rumination - so far as i've found its unique to each playthru so if you are in NG+ you have to remember where you got your first coin again...

riddle of madness- personally i've always just used my main pawn for it :p, it works for me should for you (just pick them up and drop them on platform and talk and your done

the sealing phail gained from the riddle of eyes is best used to bring the old guy or the twin to the sphinx for their respective quest alternatively just keep a portstone on you and place it at the sphinx, teleport using a ferrystone this will save you alot of headaches

Riddle of Differentiation - for the twins quest one has scars on his chest the other does not easiest way to tell them apart

after you do all 10 quest make sure you have a bow type vocation(archer or warfarer) and have the unmaker arrow in your inventory equip it and shoot her just as she takes off to insta kill and get the final key

                                                            • Anonymous

The last part about fighting the Sphynx is not good. You should look what to do in the comments instead and not fail the quest like i did.

Sphinx Riddle #9: The Riddle of Futility DD2

Easy solution: Use a portcrystal to warp him to the jar without ever picking it up. pick him up, and then ferrystone.

                                                                • Anonymous

for the fight: tell your pawns to WAIT, so they dont attack. then ONLY attack the Sphinx back (legs of the lion) and avoid hitting the boobas / face. otherwise she will fly away and its impossible to stop her. "shooting her down" like this wiki says is NOT an option. she simply doesnt care and fly away

                                                                  • Anonymous

For the Riddle of Conviction , where you duplicate items , don't bother with jadeite orb quest, you can get by on that with a forgery and extra bribe, give instead the Ring of Recitation" so you can have 2 and get 50% increased cast speed on your sorcerer :3

                                                                    • Stupid quest, 2nd time she flew away after getting the unmaking arrow and littering her with arrows. The first time she triggered a challenge, but then she got disappointed for me using the unmaking arrow at the start of fight.
So basically there is no sure way to make her fight, at least I have an unmaking arrow now that I didn't get to use.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Even fighting the Sphinx is also a riddle. Focus on its animal parts instead of the human parts or it will fly away disappointed. This way, you won't have to use the instakill arrow.

                                                                        • Anonymous

when/if you fight her, make sure you deal all of your damage to her backside/top and avoid hitting her head/human portions completely. i'd also dismiss your pawns and make your main pawn wait (or throw them off a mountain or whatever) so they deal no damage to her.

you do not need to use the arrow of unmaking, you just have to not damage her human parts.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • For the Sphinx Riddle #9: The Riddle of Futility instead of taking the vase to the npc you can bring the npc to the vase with a Ferrystone. "'If the mountain will not come to Muhammad'"

                                                                              • Anonymous

So i just got all 5 items together at once and it fails the first riddle. It wont accept it with a person in the phial, and if you let the person out, the phial breaks... my bad, new game plus i guess... hope someone sees this before they make the same mistake!

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

You can duplicate a Portcrystal with the riddle! I confirmed it last night.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

For riddle #4, I duplicated the port crystal received from the first riddle since that was the first one I've received.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

The reward was the same but the comment made by the sphinx was different, something about being greedy.. pft. Unfortunately, Ulrika and Wilhelmina started attacking eachother after the Riddle of Madness was completed.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            Keep in mind:

You don't need to answer every riddle correctly (I failed the Rumination one and succeeded on the other first 4, and it relocated appropriately.)
Even if you fail a riddle, it will still count for the number of riddles answered.

Failing two riddles (rumination and counting) made the sphinx stop the riddles, at that point I could still attack. For some reason, using the Unmaking Arrow as it flew away didn't work - suggest using it immediately once the fight begins instead.

                                                                                            • Anonymous
