A Veil of Gossamer Clouds is a Quest. A Veil of Gossamer Clouds is not affected by the passage of time. Sven will ask you to investigate a letter that was penned by Queen Regent Disa to an unknown subject. Discover the recipient of this letter and report to Sven the results of your investigation.
You are not the only one investigating the queen regent's plots. Her son, Regentkin Sven, has been prying also, and uncovered an intriguing letter that hints at untold secrets.
How to Unlock A Veil of Gossamer Clouds
The Veil of Gossamer Clouds can be started after completing Feast of Deception by talking to Sven inside Vernworth Castle. If this isn't done right away, someone may stop you while in Vernworth to inform you that Sven wants to speak with you. See A Veil of Gossamer Clouds on the [Dragon's Dogma 2 Map].
A Veil of Gossamer Clouds Quest Walkthrough
Investigate the letter and report back to Sven
For the most part, this quest is a simple retrieve and deliver. However, you need to find the correct letter to deliver to Sven. There are two ways this quest can be started:
- Find Sven inside the Vernworth Castle. He's usually inside Sven's Chambers
- While roaming in Vernworth, you may be stopped by someone saying that Sven wants to speak with you. Then, go to Sven's Chambers
Outcome 1: Find the delivered letter
After picking up the quest, you can investigate the letter by showing it to Elena. You will find her at Vernworth Castle Gaol Tower if you have completed Saint of the Slums. Make sure to wear the marcher's guard uniform to avoid being attacked by the guards in the gaol. However, note that this portion of the quest is not required. After doing so, you will get a quest marker in Bakbattahl.
There are a variety of methods to enter Battahl. First, you may enter through the gate at Checkpoint Rest Town. This can be done legitimately or illegitimately. To enter legitimately, you can use one of the following methods:
- Show the Beastren Border Entry Permit to the guard at the gate, which is received from Brant after completing the quest Feast of Deception if you didn't apprehend the spy in the quest The Arisen's Shadow, or chose to accept the bribe. If you're human, you will need to be wearing the Beastren Mask, which you can buy for 8,700 G from Ibrahim's Scrap Store.
- Show the Border Entry Permit to the guard at the gate, which is received from Brant after completing the quest Feast of Deception if you successfully apprehended the spy in the quest The Arisen's Shadow and refuse the bribe. You will not need the Beastren Mask in this case.
- Show a Battahl Residence Permit to the guard at the gate, which is received upon purchasing a home in Bakbattahl or from Menella upon arriving in Bakbattahl during the quest Nation of the Lambent Flame. You will not need the Beastren Mask in this case.
To enter illegitimately, you can use one of the following methods:
- Hide in the back of the royal oxcart carriage as it moves through the border gate. This can be accomplished by waiting until morning, and then resting at the bench once. A short time afterward, the carriage should appear outside the gate to Checkpoint Rest Town. You may need to travel further into town and back across the bridge a few times until it appears. Then just climb in the back and wait several minutes for the cart to cross the gate.
- Alternatively, you may choose to run through the gate when the royal oxcart carriage is passing through. This will cause the guards to attack you.
- You may cross the border by following the course of the river through the western mountain pass. The river runs underneath the bridge leading into Checkpoint Rest Town.
- You may cross the border by traveling through Guerco Cavern to the east of Checkpoint Rest Town. This will bring you to the coastal area just below Bakbattahl. From there, you can travel down the coast to the city.
Once you have passed through the border, in most cases it will be fastest to take the Oxcart from Checkpoint Rest Town to Bakbattahl before heading to Forbidden Magick Research Lab.
After arriving in Bakbattahl, walk towards the east to reach the entrance to the Flamebearer Palace and explore the southern side to reveal the bridge connected to the Forbidden Magick Research Lab.
Once you're inside, follow the path ahead which will take you to a bigger room with a statue inside. Continue following the marker where you will eavesdrop on a conversation between Yglie and Jerome, where they're talking about a letter that had just arrived. Enter the room which is in the middle of the marked area, which will take you to Workshop #2, and you will find the Letter to Lord Phaesus in the middle of the table.
After acquiring the letter, return to Sven's Chambers in Vernworth Castle, the same location where you talked to him at the start of this quest. Choose the dialogue option "See for yourself. (Show letter) and hand him the Letter to Lord Phaesus. When you're done talking to Sven, the quest A Veil of Gossamer Clouds will be marked as completed. NOTE: If you lose the letter, try visiting Ibrahim the forger at Checkpoint Rest Town. He usually has the missing items for sale.
Outcome 2: Show Sven the unfinished letter
Show the letter to Waldhar at The Gracious Hand's Vaults. You will find him here after having completed The Caged Magistrate and The Heel of History. After doing so, he tells you that it is a love letter. Then, report back to Sven to report your findings. Choose the dialogue option "'Twas a love letter." then the quest A Veil of Gossamer Clouds will be marked as completed.

A Veil of Gossamer Clouds Quest Rewards
You showed Sven the unfinished letter:
The unfinished letter that Sven discovered revealed not hints of Disa's plots, but her affection for the man named Phaesus. This development seemed to come as quite a shock to the regentkin, if the coloring of his cheeks was anything to go by.
Find the delivered letter:
Pursuing Disa's unfinished letter took you all the way to Battahl, where you retrieved the missive that was sent in its place. It revealed the queen regent's true aim: to place her son on the throne of Vermund by means of a "tragedy." Wanting no part in such a scheme, the regentkin vowed to thwart it by any means.

It probably doesn't hold any significance, but handing in the (finished) letter to Sven by selecting "'Twas a love letter" seems to yield a rather pointless conclusion. Sven simply gets flustered over the fact that Disa has the hots for Phaesus and remarks that he wishes the letter was more useful to their investigation. Meanwhile, if you hand in the letter normally, he automatically comes to the conclusion that Disa is concocting some sort of scheme to have Sven instated as the new ruler, seeking to do away with the Arisen and even the current false Sovren. Maybe it's just meant to show that Waldhar's conclusion doesn't reflect the bigger picture because he's unaware of what's actually going on, but from a video game standpoint, it's weird that the extra legwork to investigate the letter seems to yield a suboptimal result

This is weird, I get threatened to enter the Lab from the Palace, but going inside the Lab from the "back entrance" or the gaol, nothing happens. I was able to explore it freely. Had the citizen permit in my inventory though and the blue crystal request from Ambrosius, also was wearing a hood. I'm not sure what the trigger is to make it safe to explore the supposedly "Restricted" lab

I somehow managed to screw this up by losing the letter. I don't even know how I lost it, it's just gone. Anyone got ideas?

Don't use that goddamn fortune teller. She's led me down the wrong path like 3 times now. She's about to have an encounter with the brine.

Waldhar in the catacombs (the magistrate dude) has some interesting insights in this actually if you seek him after obtaining the letter/quest from Sven.

This quest appears regardless if you did masked correspondent or not. You don’t have to do masked correspondent for this quest to appear. Someone please update the wiki.

if you seize the spy on "The Arisen's Shadow" quest and do not accept his coin will lead bren to arrest that spy and you getting entry permit to battahl that does not require beastren mask.
- Anonymous
completed today without talking to Elena in the gaol (finished saint of the slums though) and not wearing a beastren mask (maybe we can freely roam the lab after advancing the story quest? the one where we need to repair g*****y)
- Anonymous
Wear the mask of concealment to walk around the forbidden magic lab without being attacked. It can be bought from geor at checkpoint rest town.
- Anonymous
if you have rescued Magistrate Waldhar, you can show him the letter and he will tell you what it means, and that you need to probably go to Bathal
- Anonymous
You don't need the beastmask if you have the permit, at least i didn't as a human
Masked Correspondence does not need to be completed to get this quest. Only Feast of Deception. I got this quest on my first playthrough without even knowing Masked Correspondence quest existed and having missed it entirely.
