Tolled to Rest is a Quest for Dragon's Dogma 2 (DD2). This quest will have you escort a seemingly dutiful NPC named Oskar. After previously abandoning his duty to ring the bell at the cenotaph for a special rite, he's now resolved to continue his responsibility to make the passageway safer for people to travel through. This quest is affected by the passage of time.

Once the site of a war between Vermund and Battahl, the ancient battleground is now overrun with monsters. Yet there is one soul who braves it still, driven by a sense of duty.

How to Unlock Tolled to Rest Quest in Dragon's Dogma 2

This quest is unlocked by saving Oskar's request after saving him from a monster attack on the road to the Ancient Battleground. [Dragon's Dogma 2 Map].

Dragon's Dogma 2 Tolled to Rest Quest Notes & Tips

  • This quest does not unlock any other quest. However, the location for this quest contains the Nation's Death Knell which is a grimoire required for the Side Quests, Spellbound, and The Sorcerer's Appraisal.
  • This quest does not have multiple outcomes.
  • This quest can be stopped or rendered unable to start by Oskar disappearing. Oskar disappearing in the middle of your tasks, or not appearing at all to start the quest, could be the result of him dying for whatever reason. For such instances, you may be able to find his body at the Vermund Charnel House [See Dragon's Dogma 2 Map], and then revive him to progress the Quest. Other players have found success with reloading their game or going back to the very first spot where they found Oskar.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Tolled to Rest Quest Walkthrough

Provide Aid

You'll find Oskar on the road near the east entrance to the Ancient Battleground. As you walk through the main path, you'll hear someone crying for help. Once you get to the source of the shouting, you'll find Oskar being attacked by monsters. The quest will automatically start and you'll have to defeat the monsters for your first objective.

Escort Oskar

After you save him, he'll make the request for you to escort him into the Ancient Battleground, to the cenotaph. Accepting will progress this quest to the next objective. After your conversation, simply follow Oskar west or head to the quest marker to enter the Ancient Battleground. Keep in mind that you do have to escort your charge, so don't get too far ahead and lose him. Head up the winding path and into the castle ruins to the north. Inside, you'll find a Skeleton Lord and its Skeleton minions waiting for you. Take the west opening to go up the spiral stairs and then up the ladder to the rampart.

From there, head east to the other side of the structure to find a hole in the ground with a ladder. Head down to fight some more Skeletons. To the west is a gate that you can be opened by hitting it with your weapon. This leads to the central room you were in a while ago. If Oskar is still lagging behind at this point, this will allow him to take a shortcut to follow you. After opening it, turn around and follow the path to your objective marker to find a room with a bell. If you'd been listening to him, he'd have talked about how it used to be his duty to ring this bell as part of a rite to appease the souls of the dead here. Once you arrive, he'll ring the bell and then show you his gratitude for keeping him safe. This will complete the quest.

The grimoire under the bell is the Nation's Death Knell, a book that is needed for the Side QuestsSpellbound, and The Sorcerer's Appraisal, and then can be consumed to learn the Meteoron Skill.

BONUS: The Ancient Battleground Key that Oskar gives you as the reward for this quest opens a room here in the Ancient Battleground. Head out of the room with the bell and you should see some double doors in front of you. Turn left to find another pair of double doors blocked by breakable creates. Break them and then use the key to open the double doors. The chests inside this room can contain a Ferrystone and the Infernal Edge.

WARNING: If you get to the bell ahead of Oskar, do NOT take the grimoire from its spot below the bells. Oskar will see that spot empty and you'll have to complete an additional objective of finding and returning a Nation's Death Knell to that specific spot. Players have reported bugs with this task, such as not being able to return the grimoire even if they had just gotten it a few moments ago.

NOTE: Other players have reported certain complications with this quest. Chief among them is not being able to find Oskar, either to start the Quest or to progress the escort objective, as Oskar seems to just disappear as you're waiting for him to follow you. Another is being unable to return the grimoire Nation's Death Knell, or using/selling it prematurely. Players have reported the following fixes for these glitches:

  • For some, resetting the game and then reloading allowed Oskar to return to where he was supposed to be. Some players who'd just gotten the grimoire and then are unable to return it despite it still being in their inventory have also found some success with reloading the game.
  • For some, they were able to find Oskar back at the point where they found him near the east entrance of the Ancient Battleground.
  • Oskar disappearing in the middle of your tasks, or not appearing at all to start the quest, could be the result of him dying for whatever reason. For such instances, you may be able to find his body at the Vermund Charnel House [See Dragon's Dogma 2 Map], and then revive him to progress the Quest.

Tolled to Rest Quest Rewards in Dragon's Dogma 2

The ancient battleground is a forbidding place, haunted by spirits raised to fight in the war of decades past. Traces of their battle and the forbidden arts employed in their waking linger on to this day, imperiling all who would walk these unhallowed grounds.

So Oskar disappeared, most likely, because I didn’t realize I was to escort him at the beginning, per se. Went to the morgue he wasn’t there went back fought and killed the dragon, then explored the rest of the ruins, including following this walk-through, but age was nowhere to be seen or revived. It got to be night, and I worked my way back out towards where you initially meet him, to see if he had died along the way, and if his corpse was there. Suddenly he respawned at my feet as a dead body, in the midst of a fight between many skeletons, and there were some other pawns also fighting the skeletons. So I could him wakestone him and finish the quest. Hope this helps anyone else having trouble.

So I was traveling to the checkpoint town for another quest. This quest popped up without seeing or hearing anyone. I initially thought it was a generic random encounter. Went back after getting stuck with another weirdly designed time-limited quest (wolves kidnapping kid quest). Came back to Ancient battleground and found nothing. Looked everywhere and picked up the grimoire before reading the wiki about not picking it up. I used a ferrystone and looked in the cemetery to revive him but no one was there to revive. After wasting like two hours, I finally found him dead on one of those broken buildings.

I had a backup inn save but that would mean four to five hours of lost progress. I originally wanted to load back because the Dullahan in the rescue quest disappeared midfight. Running into THREE time-sensitive quests back to back across the map sucked ass.

Just gave him the forged book, and he tell you it dosnt work and even the bell have a different sound. So you have to give him the real one

If I decline the escort part of this mission (when Oskar asked to be escorted after being saved from harpies), will the quest lock? Or can I escort him later?

            • Anonymous

Bringing Oskar back from the morgue after clearing the drake and finishing the quest for the key. Returned later only to find the skeletons killed Oskar, so I picked up the grimoire, no need to revive him now.

So I sorted screwed up. I didn't realize this was a quest at first. And I only had 1 wakestone at the time so I wasn't gonna use it on an npc with ???? For their name. Explored the whole battlegrounds took the grimoire and sold it. Ventured around to where the chimera and wright are that has another of the same grimoire in a chest. But since i am just playing as sir bonks a lot. I sold them both. According to the interwebs those are the only two in the game. Am i screwed forever? Did i waste a wakestone by going back to revive him with one?

My Oskar disappeared and wasn't on the ground fighting harpies where I originally found him. He was dead, up on the cliffside in that same area, though. I only stumbled on him because someone's pawn was leading me to a treasure chest up there, and I found him on the way lol. Had to use a wakestone on him, and was able to finish the quest.

Walking out the front door and a little ways away and coming back to Oskar seems to fix the bug with picking up the book, it let me talk to him and give it to him and he put it back and tolled it

Haven't had any issues with this quest myself, but I did notice that once I completed it (and took the book) that Oskar would wander around Checkpoint Rest Town. Literally walked right past me as I was at the Scrap Shop to make a forgery of the book I just robbed him of. Perhaps he's around town even when the quest is incomplete for those who can't find him? Thought I'd share in case this helps someone.

What is the purpose of this quest?
Why does he need a book to ring the bell?
                        What does the bell to?
Why did he risk his life to ring a bell that does nothing?

if Oskar disappears for you on this quest, try walking back to the point where you originally found him, that's where I found him after losing him.
