The Ailing Arborheart is a Quest for Dragon's Dogma 2 (DD2). This quest follows the events of the small side story featuring the elves and their hidden village, the Sacred Arbor. After saving Doireann in the events of the previous quest, talking to her will have her tell you about the Arborheart, and how, as the quest title suggests, it's currently ailing and in need of aid. From her knowledge, soil that goes by the elvish term "gwynfencha" is able to repair it, but she doesn't know its translation in the common tongue. This quest is not affected by the passage of time.
Under the boughs of the Arborheart you encountered Doireann, a young elven woman, who informed you of the great tree's ailment, and that only the nourishing gwyfencha can cure it.
How to Unlock The Ailing Arborheart Quest in Dragon's Dogma 2
This quest is unlocked by first finishing the quests, A Trial of Archery. To start this quest, speak to Doireann at The Arborheart. See The Ailing Arborheart on the [Dragon's Dogma 2 Map].

Dragon's Dogma 2 The Ailing Arborheart Quest Walkthrough
Find Out What Gwyfencha Is
This quest is part of a mini-questline involving the hidden elves in the Sacred Arbor. To start this quest, you are required to finish the quest, A Trial of Archery, in order to save and get acquainted with Doireann. It is also recommended that you complete the quest, Steeled Resolve, Blazing Forge beforehand as well, but you can also just finish it in the middle of progressing this quest. Speak to Doireann at The Arborheart in order to begin. It seems like the Arborheart, the giant sacred tree around which the village is built, is dying and only gwyfencha can fix it. However, she doesn't know its translation in the common tongue.
How to get Woodland Wordsmith Specialization
NOTE: To have an easier time with this quest, and in the Sacred Arbor in general, it's best to have a Pawn have the Woodland Wordsmith specialization. You can do this in two ways:
- Go to the Arborheart Riftstone within the Sacred Arbor. Interact with it to enter The Rift and then look for Pawns with this specialization. One easy way to do so is to click the option to 'View Unique Pawns,' and then click 'View Official Pawns' afterward. This gives you a list of Pawns that the developers created themselves and some of them will have the Woodland Wordsmith specialization.
- You can have your Main Pawn have the Woodland Wordsmith specialization by using a Woodland Wordsmith's Tome from your inventory. To get this item, go to Kough's Inn within the Sacred Arbor and then raise your affinity with Kough, the innkeeper. To do so, speak to her and then choose the second option to give her a few Bunches of Flowers. These can be crafted by combining two relatively fresh flowers together, or buying them from a special shop in Bakbattahl. Rest in between giving her gifts until she gives you the tome.
If your Main Pawn or any of your other Pawns have the Woodland Wordsmith specialization, they'll immediately translate this word for you and complete this objective. Otherwise, you can find her brother Glyndwr, who's spent long enough in human society to know what it means, and he'll translate it for you as well.
A longer route that players have reportedly taken to finish this objective is by completing the quest, Put a Spring in Thy Step, and then speaking to Gautstafr again afterward.
Speak With a Battahli Blacksmith
Regardless of however you learn it, you'll find out that gwyfencha translates to Scalecinder in the common tongue. You'll then have to find and talk to a Battahli blacksmith who can tell you how to procure some of it for the dying tree. For this task, you'll have to go to Brokkr's Smithy in Bakbattahl. Brokkr is grumpy and on his way to retirement, so you'll have to try and ask his apprentice Sara for help. Note that Sara might not be able to help you, as you'll see that she has troubles of her own, which is why you have to have the quest, Steeled Resolve, Blazing Forge completed as well.
Sara would be more than willing to procure the Scalecinder herself. However, she explains that Brokkr might not be as willing to cooperate, due to his prejudice against the elves. However, she does mention an elven dish called the nutriabh that she thinks will placate the dwarf, as he is quite fond of it, whether he admits to it or not. This completes the quest and also starts the quest, Out of the Forest, Into the Forge.
DD2 The Ailing Arborheart Quest Objectives
- Find out what gwyfencha is
- Speak with a Battahli blacksmith
The Ailing Arborheart Quest Rewards in Dragon's Dogma 2
Gwyfencha—or scalecinder, as it is more commonly known outside of the Sacred Arbor—is the only substance that can provide the nourishment the Arborheart needs to recover. Yet though you have found a means of procuring this material at Brokkr's smithy, the stubborn dwarf is just as prejudiced against elves as the rest of his people. You expect it's going to take quite a bit of convincing for him to allow your elven friend, Doireann, the privilege of rummaging through his forge.

[FOR ANYBODY WITH THIS MISSION IN THE UNMOORED WORLD]
if you are in the Unmoored world and need to find out what Gwyfencha is (dont go to the seafloor shrine and talk to Rothais this will lock Glyndwr dialogue to the Halls of the First Dawn)
instead head directly to Arbor and talk to Glyndwr he will tell you its Scalecinder
Hope This helps

trial of archery is not a requirement for this quest, I got it after only doing the gift of bows

Wow. Longest quest in the world and all you get is 13k gold, a useless cape, and the option to do an escort quest which gives you... some rift crystals and literally a bunch of flowers. I think I hate elves.

I received the Warbler Capelet as a reward, I collected 6 pieces of scalecinder.
Spoke to the Spring in thy Step midget and he told me what it was. Also the i-need-a-bow guy told me.
But Bokkr and Sara do not advance the quest.
This is why everyone hates midgets.
