Short-Sighted Ambition is a Quest for Dragon's Dogma 2 (DD2). Short-Sighted Ambition is not affected by the passage of time. The Arisen reaches Bakbattahl and encounters a man and his family running a shop, but he/she learns something is wrong with the kind man's vision. Isaac asks for the Arisen's help to fetch him a Ripened Quince to help him continue reading a mysterious grimoire containing a wicked effect that may ruin his family.

For some, peaceful days breed not satisfaction, but a yearning for something more. So it is with the apothecary Isaac, who seeks to improve his lot by studying a grimoire.

How to Unlock Short-Sighted Ambition Quest in Dragon's Dogma 2

When you reach Bakbattahl and have completed the main quest Nation of Lambent Flame, look for Isaac's Wares and purchase anything from Isaac. A dialogue cutscene will then trigger showing he gives the wrong item. Listen to Isaac's request, which is to get him a Ripened Quince and the quest will automatically unlock. See Short-Sighted Ambition on the [Dragon's Dogma 2 Map].

Dragon's Dogma 2 Short-Sighted Ambition Quest Walkthrough

MEET ISAAC

To start the quest, head over to Isaac's Wares in Bakbattahl and purchase any item from Isaac, the attendant of the shop. A dialogue cutscene will then play out showing Isaac giving the wrong item and shares that he is losing his vision. He tells you about his plan and first asks you to bring a ripened quince for him to reduce fatigue in his eyes so that he can continue reading the grimoire. [See Dragon's Dogma 2 Map].

FIND A RIPENED QUINCE

The Quince is a rare fruit that is located in Battahl. You can find one if you explore the west area of Battahl, however, a more reliable source is to kill Goblins and loot their bodies to find the fruit. Once you have it, rest or pass time by dozing off at a bench for 3 days in Bakbattahl for the fruit to turn into a Ripened Quince. Bring the fruit to Isaac once it is ripe.

Pass the time again for a few days and then visit Isaac at his shop to check his condition. You'll know when the quest progresses when he mentions that he finished reading the grimoire he told you. He follows up with another task which is to find the second volume of the grimoire to reveal its "true" power. After speaking to Isaac, you'll be stopped by Isaac's daughter and wife as you leave. Esmerelda then asks the arisen if they could stop helping Isaac and reveals the truth about how he lost his eye.

FIND THE SECOND VOLUME OF THE GRIMOIRE

Now, you need to find the second volume of the grimoire, On the Transference of Souls 2, and this can be obtained by purchasing it from Ibrahim at Ibrahim's Scrap Store for 2000 G [See Dragon's Dogma 2 Map]. Ibrahim's shop is located in Checkpoint Rest Town. By now, you have to make choice, and there are two outcomes for this quest. A good one, and a bad one. For this walkthrough, it will focus on the good outcome.

OUTCOME 1: GIVE ISAAC THE FAKE GRIMOIRE

GOOD OUTCOME: After the conversation with Isaac's wife, you should have an idea or a feeling that the grimoire Isaac is reading contains harmful details, and we need to find a way to prevent him from reading the second volume. The answer is quite simple, and that is to create a forgery of the second tome by requesting Ibrahim's service which is the same shop where you bought the On the Transference of Souls 2. Fabricating it will cost 2400 G.

Wait for around 2 days and go back to Ibrahim to take the forged tome. He'll give you back the original tome "On the Transference of Souls 2" and the fabricated version "On the Transit of Souls 2". REMEMBER THE TITLE OF THE FORGED TOME.

Return to Isaac in Bakbattahl and give him the item "On the Transit of Souls 2". Follow Isaac to his home and a dialogue cutscene will trigger. With this outcome, you managed to stop Isaac from killing his family. You'll obtain the following rewards for choosing this outcome: 3000 XP and 16000 G.

OUTCOME 2: GIVE ISAAC THE REAL GRIMOIRE

The steps for obtaining this outcome are quite simple. Just give Isaac the grimoire after buying the "On the Transference of Souls 2" from Ibrahim. Deliver it and follow Isaac to his home where his family is, Isaac reads the tome, resulting in the death of his wife and daughter who has both turned into sand. For this outcome, you will only acquire 3000 XP, and you can loot the Ring of Disfavor from where Esmerelda was standing. Isaac will then leave and abandon his shop. Now, if this is the outcome you get, later on, during the quest "Off the Pilfered Path", you offer Hugo the job of managing Isaac's shop since no one is handling it. That's of course, if Hugo is alive in his questline.

DD2 Short-Sighted Ambition Quest Objectives

  • Bring Isaac a ripened quince.
  • Find the grimoire's second volume.
    • Give Isaac the original grimoire
    • Create a forgery of the grimoire.
  • Deliver the grimoire to Isaac.

Short-Sighted Ambition Quest Rewards in Dragon's Dogma 2

This Quest has multiple Outcomes. Outcome 1: Give the forged grimoire to Isaac

It is never easy to improve one's lot in life, and some never manage it, no matter how hard they strive. Isaac's ambitions were stumped by a counterfeit grimoire, forcing him to resign himself to the humble life of an apothecary.

Outcome 2: Give the original Grimoire to Isaac

Sometimes even the best intentions can result in the most unfortunate consequences. Though he sought only to improve his family's fortunes, dabbling with grimoires beyond his ken cost Isaac the wife and daughter he held dear. Now the man departs on a journey in search of the family he has lost —a journey without end.

Isaac receives the fake grimoire - Short-Sighted Ambition Rewards:

  • 3000 XP
  • 16000 G

Isaac receives the original grimoire - Short-Sighted Ambition Rewards:

Issac will eventually sell vol1 and you can buy it from his shop and combine it with the real vol2 if you gave him the forgery. It creates a Celestial Paean spell book. I think its a one use item, it goes into the valuables. Unlike the average spell books. I haven't used mine, I thought maybe there was a use for it that I haven't found yet?

If you go the forgery route, after the quest is finished you can check his store again and he sells the volume 1: “On the Transference of Souls 1”. You can buy it and then combine the 2 Volumes resulting in 2x”On the Transference of Souls” which is a consumable/giftable item. If you use it, it cast the spell “Celestial Paean”. It’s a little bit down reward… I think it has more value as a gift.

Waldhar actually warns you that the book is evil and has some interesting dialogue if you talk to him while the quest is active.

It surprised me that you have to wipe Isaac's family to offer Hugo a job. Usually, you do a good deed and that gets you a favor (offering Hugo the job in this case), but nope. You destroy the shop owner's life, and let Hugo take over the shop LOL.

In case anyone is wondering, his wife and daughter do not appear to end up at the charnel house after he disintegrates them.

              • Anonymous

Once Isaac leads you to his house, the cutscene to continue the quest won't trigger unless his wife, Esmerelda, and his daughter, Raelia, are alive. If they are dead for whatever reason, you can find their bodies in the Bakbattahl charnel house (closer to the back wall). Resurrect them with wakestones, and they will appear next to Isaac. The quest can continue from there.

Loved this quest because it actually gave me a chance to rp my evil arisen properly. So when I experimented and gave him the forgery only to see that it leads to the good ending I reloaded and gave him the book :)

i received the ring of disfavor before buying the grimoire in check point rest town: was wandering around near Isaac's shop and forced into a conversation between Isaac's wife and daughter, they asked me to not give Isaac the grimoire and i agreed then she gave me the ring. haven't finished the quest and still carrying around the grimoire, gonna forge it now

                    • Anonymous

You can buy volume from him if you give him the forgery. Combine both volumes and you get a grimoire that lets you cast the mage maester skill 1 time, kind of a let down…

This quest isn't triggering for me. Nation of Lambent Flame is complete. I think it's related that I also completed Off the Pilfered Path with a lame ending where Hugo sets off on a journey to find himself because I wasn't aware of any jobs to suggest to him. Not sure what I can do to start this quest at this point.

                        • Anonymous

Nation of Lambent Flame is not required, I triggered the quest without having completed one quest for Brant

since theres no info here, give him the REAL book for the BAD ending, and give him FAKE book for the GOOD ending. you can combine the 2 books (the soul transference books) to create the single use spell Celestial Paean, but only on the GOOD ending.
