Completing Put a Spring in Thy Step will unlock the Vocation: Magick Archer.
While traveling in the south, you encountered an old dwarf with an achy back, groaning in pain by the wayside. It would be most unseemly if you were to abandon him to his plight.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Put a Spring in Thy Step Quest Walkthrough
Help Gautstafr find relief for his back pain
After reaching Agamen Volcanic Island, you will encounter Gautstafr on the road who is in great pain because of his back. He will ask you to retrieve 3 Wildflowers or herbs to relieve his pain (Morningtide, etc). You can look around the area and will likely reach his home as you gather the wildflowers, but return to his spot to give him what he needs. Once you give him the wildflowers, Gautstafr will want to reward you for your efforts so he will ask that you see him at Windwalker's Home. To reach his house, take the path leading to the left, and follow it until you reach the rocky path connecting the island to shallow water. Make a half-turn to a connecting island and you will find his home at the top of this secluded area.
Cliodhna will come out and is ready to turn you away but Gautstafr will intervene and tell his wife the charity you have extended to him when he needed help. His wife is hesitant and regards you negatively, she suspects you are up to no good, especially if you are traveling to a far-off area. The couple will continue arguing but Gautstafr will stand his ground and insist that you are the good sort, so he wants to reward you truly.
Gautstafr will go inside to fetch your reward, and as he reaches for it, he hurts his back again. The ailing man exclaims that he needs to visit the curative spring so he can finally get treatment. However, he can't travel alone, as the monsters will prey on him. After this short dialogue, speak with Gautstafr again so you can accompany him to the hot spring. Choose the dialogue option "Offer to escort him" to progress the quest.
Escort Gautstafr to Geyser Hamlet
After agreeing to escort Gautstafr to Geyser Hamlet, he will join your party so he can arrive there safely. At this point, the path will become more dangerous as more enemies will be looking to attack your party. On your way to return to the main island, Magma Scales will attack you. Eliminate them as fast as possible and pay attention to the in-game time so you can reach your destination before nighttime. However, if you run too fast, Gautstafr will ask you to move a bit slower, as it is hard for him to keep up because of his aching back. Follow the path to the eastern side where you will encounter Hobgoblins near a scaffolding. This group is a dangerous one so approach them carefully. After this section, the path splits into two. Take the right side to get to your destination.
As you travel forward, you will encounter a Stone Golem here. This is a pretty strong enemy so take your time to eliminate this foe. However, if the fight gets too dangerous, don't hesitate to leave so you can focus on the task at hand. Alternatively, you can carry Gautstafr if the Arisen has the capacity for it. After a while, you will reach the Volcanic Island Camp where you will fight some Hobgoblins at the gate. After fighting them, head to the top area of the camp to reach the Geyser Hamlet. You can access this area through the tunnel with scaffolding at the entrance. You will also find this signage that will lead to the hot spring. After reaching the location, Gautstafr will immediately leave to take a dip. Then, his wife, Cliodhna will appear as if out of nowhere. She candidly tells you she was worried for her husband's well-being so she followed you at a distance.
She acknowledges the good deeds that you have done for her husband and she will offer her skills as a Magick Archer-Maister, and his husband's service as a blacksmith. After this, the quest Put a Spring in Thy Step will be marked as completed and you will unlock the Magick Archer vocation and receive other rewards.

Put a Spring in Thy Step Quest Rewards in Dragon's Dogma 2
You helped Gautstafr get relief for his aching back:
Even the smallest act of kindness is a great boon to the one who receives it. The steps you took on Gautstafr's behalf cost you but little, yet earned you the friendship and confidence of the dwarf and his wife. The couple are not accustomed to such charity, having been driven to live in so far-flung a place by the slings and arrows of their neighbors. How fortunate, then, that it should be you who crossed their path. Perhaps this serendipitous encounter was born of the fate that guides your steps as the Arisen.
You helped Gautstafr get relief for his aching back - Put a Spring in Thy Step Rewards:
- 4800 XP
- 0 Dcp
- Laurel Circlet
- 23,000 G
- Vocation: Magick Archer

this quest is so annoying cause this guy is insanely hard-headed and would rather stand and gawk at everything that shows up rather than running from it

You can use the phial from the sphinx to carry the old man. Let the cutscene trigger when you reach the springs. It won’t consume the phial and you’ll save a ton of time

I had a bug where the quest log remained at "deliver the wildflowers" even after I had already done it, and the quest marker pointed to the original spot on the road where I'd first met him.
If this happens to you too, what you actually need to do is ignore the quest log and map marker, and instead follow the path around the coastline to the house marked by an arisen symbol on the map.

Once you meet him and give him the herbs, you go back to his house and he greets you outside.
Rather than go in the house, put a portcrystals here and continue to the encampment. Then place a second portcrystal here, that way you can begin the escort quest and instantly warp to the end.

Seems like this quest isn't available if you kill the dragon and trigger post game. Guess I've got to get Magick Archer in NG+?
Dude just went into the brine, not sure what to do :T
