Dragon's Dogma 2 Sphinx Guide

A Sphinx in Greek mythology is a figure that represents a spiritual guardian with a human's head, a lion's body, and an eagle's wing. In the World of Dragon's Dogma, the Sphinx possess similar features and serves as a guardian protecting 5 different chests. Each treasure chest can be solved by doing its specific puzzle and solving the riddles. To begin, the players must set out on a journey to discover the Sphinx's lair.

Sphinx Puzzle Guide Dragon's Dogma 2

The Sphinx guards 5 different chests and requires players to solve its riddle before they can claim their prize. Below, you will find information on the Riddles of the Sphinx and How to Solve them in Dragon's Dogma 2.

NOTE: Players only get one chance at solving the puzzles presented by the Sphinx. If you make a mistake, you will no longer be able to participate in solving that puzzle. It will lock you out from earning the trophy from that playthrough and the Sphinx will abandon your game. You will have to redo your progress on another playthrough.

It is highly recommended to create save files or backups before you approach the Sphinx to answer. This way, you are guaranteeing a second chance for yourself if you happen to give the wrong answer.

All Sphinx's Riddles and Answers in Dragon's Dogma 2

This section is dedicated to all the riddles from the Sphinx at her first location in Mountain Shrine

Sphinx Riddle #1: The Riddle of Eyes DD2

“Our eyes are our allies, yet oft do they betray, for eyes tell lies, so I advise, and thence do lead astray. Yet how will your eyes advise you? Venture through yonder door, and retrieve that which of greatest value.”

Answer: After getting the first Riddle from the Sphinx, you will be told to travel to a cave and look for the item that you think is of the greatest value. Inside this cave, you will navigate traps, defeat goblins, and possibly encounter an ogre. There are also treasure chests within the cave where you can get valuable items from.

One of the treasure chests can be located right above the door when you enter the cave, inside the chest is a Sealing Phial, this is the item that you will have to give to the Sphinx. To reach the chest, there is a path going up to the left if you're facing the door. You will be rewarded with a Wakestone upon completing the riddle.

NOTE: If you consume the Sealing Phial, you will not be able to solve this riddle. The item breaks upon releasing the content, thus, making it unusable. If you bring the item with an NPC inside the phial, the quest will fail.

Sphinx Riddle #2: The Riddle of Madness DD2

"Love is as twin to madness, they say. They are bound fast as night is to day. So bring forth your most beloved one to me, that I might gauge the depth of your insanity."

Answer: After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, you will have to bring someone who is your most beloved which is a character you have romanced. At this point, you can use the Sealing Phial which allows you to pick up and pocket a character in your inventory and then let them out by the Sphinx. Another option is to carry the character but you will need to be in the Mage, Sorceror, fighter, thief, or warrior vocation to carry other characters. Lastly, you can place a port crystal by the Sphinx carry the character, and teleport with them using a Ferrystone to the Sphinx. You will be rewarded with a Portcrystal upon completing the riddle.

NOTEUlrika is confirmed to work on this riddle if you have romanced her also Glyndwr as either body type. So long as they have red cheeks when you talk to them, they have enough points to be romanced. Alternatively, you can carry your main pawn and the Sphinx will accept it.

  • If you choose your main pawn as the answer, it increases your Pawn Affinity by 20.
  • If you bring more than one person you have romanced, you will still complete the riddle, however, they will begin to kill each other until only your true love remains.
  • You can put Ulrika in the bottle and carry Ferrystone to a port crystal

Sphinx Riddle #3: The Riddle of Wisdom DD2

"The parent knows the child, yet the reverse is far from true. The child knows not the parent: such is the parent's due. I am a lost child; for kinship do I yearn. So bring to me my "Parent". that might better learn."

Answer: After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, you will have to enter the rift and find a pawn called "SphinxFather" who is a Capcom-made pawn for you. Bring him to the Sphinx to complete the riddle, you will also be rewarded with 1200 RC for completing this riddle.

NOTE: When using the Riftstone, select "View Linked Riftstones" and select "Riftstone of Fellowship". There you'll find either a Father, Mother, or Parent you can use. The Sphinx will accept any of the mentioned pawns.

Sphinx Riddle #4: The Riddle of Conviction DD2

"Life is an enigma – a lender of mortal debt. Yet lighter pack makes fleeter foot and challenge nimbly met. So grant to me what you most prize, and thence elude your pondrous demise."

Answer: After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, you can give any item to the Sphinx and it will act as if it will not return it to you. When actually, it will duplicate the item it will give you as a reward.

NOTE: Giving a Portcrystal to the Sphinx here can be useful in the early parts of the game.

Sphinx Riddle #5: The Riddle of Rumination DD2

"It's ever the first we keep fond in our breast, and ever the first that eclipses the rest. You know of the Seeker's Tokens, I trust? Those keepsakes of a fondly remembered journey? Yet where was it that you found your first? Retrace your steps, if you can – you might make a new discovery. Seven days, shall we say, ere you return? May your journey be a pleasant one."

Answer: After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, you will have to go back to the place where you picked up your first Seeker's Token. You will have to remember where you got your first Seeker's Token unless you have it noted down and you will see what looks like another Seeker's Token but upon picking up, it will say Finder's Token. Head back to the Sphinx and present the item to it. You will be rewarded with a chest filled with 3x Ferrystones.

NOTE: The Trickster's Perk "Detection" will ping the presence of the Finder's Token.

  • This specific riddle is also limited to 7 days in-game. You must return to the Sphinx and deliver the item before you reach the deadline.\
  • If playing New Game + you will have to return to the location of the first token you picked up after starting NG+, not your very first collected token.

Sphinx Riddle #6: The Riddle of Reunion DD2

After completing all 5 Riddles, the Sphinx will go to her second location in Frontier Shrine. You need to find her again to continue playing the rest of the riddles. If you can manage it, you can climb on the back of the Sphinx just as she leaves so you can get a free ride to its second location. You will have to grapple it through some of the flight but you can let go and regain stamina so long as you are on its back. Alternatively, you can go to the second location by following the river below the Checkpoint Rest Town and follow it to the west. This will lead you directly to the entrance of the Frontier Shrine.

Answer: This riddle is solved automatically upon finding the Sphinx in its second location. There will be a chest on the left side that you can open and you will be rewarded with 100,000 Gold.

Sphinx Riddle #7: The Riddle of Recollection DD2

"Now, questions beget questions, and I have one for you. How many riddles have you solved thus far? My memory fails me, you see. Remind me, and make it plain. Let yonder statues be your means. For every question aptly answered, bring one here before me.”

Answer: After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, to the left, there will be a set of stone statues. What you will need to do is to bring the number of statutes corresponding to the number of riddles you've correctly completed. You will be rewarded with an Unmaking Arrow upon completing this riddle.

NOTE: The order for riddles 6-10 may be randomized, so you might get this riddle later on in the game.

  • You can also check out the number of treasures that you have opened so far if you are unsure of how many riddles you have answered correctly.
  • You can also check the wings of the Sphinx. One of the feathers will light up each time you answer a riddle correctly.

Sphinx Riddle #8: The Riddle of Contest DD2

“Though ours is a battle of wits, tests of mettle are more to your strength. Is that not so? Come, try your arm – though he shall be your opponent, not I. However, I am not one to be amused by a simple duel. Bear this ring into battle, that I might gauge your true strength.”

Answer: After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, an enemy will spawn on the right. You will have to defeat this enemy to complete the riddle, you may also push him off the ledge so he will just fall to his death. You will be rewarded the Ring of Ambition upon completing this riddle.

Sphinx Riddle #9: The Riddle of Futility DD2

“How easily the mind unravels! Some say it’s pain that does it best, others darkness – but I say neither. Rather, I say a mind cannot be more soundly broken than when it beholds its earnest efforts laid low in a single stroke. Could your survive such despair? We shall see. Here I have an amphora destine for Ser Maurits in Battahl. Deliver it to him, but beware; it’s rather fragile.”

Answer: After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, it will give you a vase that you will have to bring to a location called Mural Byway [See DD2 Map] without breaking it. Upon reaching it, there will be an NPC next to a Sphinx statue that will talk to you and you will automatically put down the vase after speaking with them. Return to the Sphinx to complete the riddle and claim the Eternal Bond Ring as your reward.

Alternatively, you can ferrystone port crystal the NPC to the Sphinx's location.

NOTE: You will fail to complete the riddle if you break the vase so to prevent that, you can make a save file before going to the Sphinx for its riddles.

Sphinx Riddle #10: The Riddle of Differentiation DD2

“So vast is the world, and full of life; you are but one of many. Indeed, in the grand scheme, we are as distinct from one another as pebbles on a beach – yet we do so love to extol our differences. But are these differences so great? If you believe so, this next task should prove exceedingly simple. I seek this man. If men are so distinct, I’m sure you’ll find him in a trice.”

Answer: After getting this riddle from the Sphinx, you will have to find a specific NPC, either Dante or Vergil, these 2 NPCs look alike but are found in different towns just wandering around.

Dante has straight hair and his scar goes downward from his right eyebrow down below his eye and can be located in Checkpoint Rest town, just north of Battahl. Vergil has curly hair and he has more scars on his right eye that go down sideways and can be located in Bakbattahl. He is at the small settlement just past the border of Checkpoint Rest Town

Once you find the needed NPC, you can carry them if you're a fighter, warrior, or thief vocation back to the Sphinx. Another method is to place a Portcrystal at the Sphinx and then teleport back while carrying the NPC with a Ferrystone. You will be rewarded with a Whimsical Daydream.

NOTE: Make sure to have a save file before starting this riddle in case you are not sure if it is Dante or Vergil that you need.

Defeat the Sphinx

NOTE: The Sphinx may be killed using the Unmaking Arrow, which requires you to equip a Bow. Aim for the non-human parts like wings, legs, tail, and such. This will guarantee an insta-kill. The Unmaking Arrow is acquired after answering the Riddle of Recollection (or #7 from this guide).

  • Fighting the Sphinx itself is a riddle and requires the player to focus on the non-human parts.
  • Hit the Sphinx only on the animal parts so it won't fly away.
  • You can defeat the Sphinx without using the Unmaking Arrow but you have to take this fight alone.
  • Pawns are unable to control where they land their attacks so it is recommended to keep them out of the fight. Use the command "Wait" to do this.
  • The clue to how you can fight the Sphinx can be found on the mural and the vase during Riddle of Futility (or #9 of this guide)

After completing all 10 Riddles, your next objective is to defeat the Sphinx. Initiate the fight by attacking the Sphinx and it will reveal having 4 Health Bars. Upon defeat, A Game of Wits will be marked as completed and the Sphinx will drop some gold and the Key of Sagacity which is used to unlock the huge golden chest behind the Sphinx. The chest contains an Eternal Wakestone which will let you revive the dead in a certain area at once.

Sphinx Location in Dragon's Dogma 2

The Sphinx can first be found at the Mountain Shrine [See DD2 map] for its first location for the first 5 riddles. After solving the first 5 riddles, it will relocate to the Frontier Shrine to complete the next 5 riddles [See DD2 Map].

Sphinx Enemy Combat Guide for DD2

The Sphinx has four health bars but can be defeated. You can fight it after completing the last riddle, The Riddle of Differentiation. It has a few stages and moves and can be defeated with precise attacks on it non-human parts (head and chest are considered human). The Mural Ode to Sphinx and the depictions on the murals and Vase's are clues.

While fighting The Sphinx if you attack a human area or attack it while it performs the pose's on the mural (one paw extended while semi crouched forward) ty[ically right afterr teleporting. Use the Wait! Command so pawns do not attack while it is in this stage or it will then cease the battle and attempt to escape or it may even wait tp fly away until you have depleted its health bar. either way If she flies away you have failed.

When reaching 0 HP she rewards you with 5 pouches of 2000 gold and the sagacity key as she teleports away during a small dialogue that stops the fight. see image

sphinx defeat

This will lead to the second strategy, which is to activate the battle and use the Unmaking Arrow to seal her making it an instant defeat.

Once you defeat The Sphinx, there will be a gold chest that you can open with the key. Open it to receive an Eternal Wakestone or make a forgery of the key before hand.

If you don't get the unmaking arrow riddle until the final one, it's literally impossible to loot it and hit her before she flies away.
Just thought I'd add that since nowhere mentions that.

      • Anonymous

        Something to add to note.

U can kill the sphinx by shooting her wing with arrow of unmaking even without doing any of her riddles. But u will miss out on the remaining chest and still claim the large chest.

        • Anonymous

The Sphinx will copy the Seeker token if given one for the riddle of conviction, which is a time saver if you can't find the last one.

          • Anonymous

If u dont care for the riddles or already have done them before. U can shoot her with the arrow of unmaking at her wing and still get the key.
I confirm this by doing this when after her 1at dialogue of meeting her then ignoring to talk to her then shot her wing with it and still get the sphinx death scene. U dont need to combat her to do this.

            • Anonymous

If you want to kill her without the onehitarrow shoot at her wings and ass dont shoot at her body or face otherwise she flys away.

              • Anonymous

There is a pawn badge requiring killing 5 Sphinxes but there is only 1 per playthrough, so doing this solo means playing the game 5 times.

                • PRO TIP
Just found this out, but in the Unmoored World, if you sleep before doing the final riddle with the Sphix and she flies away, you can just die and it will let you load to when you last rested. Now I get to go back and smoke this b****

Threw the soldier off the ledge for "The Riddle of Contest". He lived. Softlocked my Sphinx. Glad I did an inn save right before. He didn't live the second time.

                    • Anonymous

The amount of effort this lady demands is insane, remembering your first seeker token location, having to hire a pawn with a unique name without a riftstone for miles, having to figure out if Dante or Virgil is the person she was talking about (they’re very identical and the only difference I can tell between the two is teeth), oh and I accidentally cast thundermine on accident and pissed her off during the fighting trial against a random soldier, so I had to turn off my computer before it saved after I messed up.

Bottom line is, you’ll be sinking a lot of time and effort into her for rewards that only *barely* make it worth it, and of course whimsical daydream which gives a lot of money on hit but still, Jesus Christ man.

Saw someone defeat Sphinx as a Trickster with their Thief pawn. Pretty fast too.

Apparently having her target a corner and using Dragon’s Delusion staggers helps with damage uptime before she starts teleporting around the temple or casting Twin Maelstrom.

if you have two female characters - the main one and a pawn, then you can give the sphinx a costume for 150 seeker coins, she will duplicate it and you don’t have to wait ng+

I shoot her with a unmaking arrow after completing all of the trials and instead of killing her just got a little cutscene of her saying she got tired and flying away...

                            • Anonymous

heard you can use the riddle of conviction to copy a port crystal. why anyone would use the jadeite orb is beyond me. you can literally just forge that item and bribe the forger when the dude goes away for a bit

I did all the riddles correctly. I checked my quest log and it said so as well. I opened every single chest except the big one...still it said she found me lacking and flew away...WTF?

You don't have to bring your loved one for the riddle of madness. I presented my main pawn, she said something like I expected more of you, but I still got the reward

                                  • Anonymous

I managed to kill it without the god arrow and there is not time limit, you just to avoid to hit her in the chest or face, i recommend to despawn the pawns and unequip the main pawn weapon or let him go support.

for the riddle of madness I just used my main pawn and got away with it, can this be tested as this would save a LOT of time for others?
