The Sorcerer's Appraisal is a Quest for Dragon's Dogma 2 (DD2). The Sorcerer's Appraisal is not affected by the passage of time and involves procuring several grimoires that Myrddin is missing. This serves as a test to prove to Myrddin that you are worthy of his secret knowledge.

Residing in a manor in the checkpoint rest town is Myrddin, a sorcerer of great renown. He is even willing to share the secrets of his art—provided he finds you worthy, that is.

How to Unlock The Sorcerer's Appraisal Quest in Dragon's Dogma 2

Put on Noble Clothing (Courtly Tunic, Courtly Breeches) and visit Myrddin in his house at Checkpoint Rest Town. Once you are inside, he will give you this quest. See The Sorcerer's Appraisal on the [Dragon's Dogma 2 Map].

If you are able to get within the home without wearing prestigious clothing, he will proceed to attack you.

Dragon's Dogma 2 The Sorcerer's Appraisal Quest Notes & Tips

  • This quest does not unlock any other quest
  • This quest has multiple outcomes
  • This quest requires the player to be well-dressed
  • This quest is canceled if you don't pick it up before ??
  • You can get 3 books and give them to him at once in order to get the Myrddin's Chronicle which teaches you Maelstrom as well as 11000 gold and Ares Morpho Robe. This counts towards the Master of the Maistes gold trophy.

Dragon's Dogma 2 The Sorcerer's Appraisal Quest Walkthrough

Wear Noble Clothing to receive Myrddin's invite

Myrddin doesn't like the idea of mingling with the commoners and likes fancy items. Based on his preference, he would only invite noble people into his home, or those who wear noble clothing. During the early stages of the game, one of the ways that you can acquire noble clothing is to complete The Ornate Box, a side quest that you can complete to earn the gratitude of Sven, who will reward you with Courtly Breeches and Courtly Tunic upon completion.

Alternate: Buy the same noble clothing from Philbert's Sundries in Vernworth but they cost 150,000 G per piece.

Gather the Grimoires

The first part of this quest involves procuring 3-5 Grimoires that Myrddin is looking for. This guide will indicate their locations and how to retrieve each tome. NOTE: There are two NPCs who seek the same tomes in Vermund. The other quest is called Spellbound, and a girl named Trysha seeks to harness her magick. Once you have collected enough tomes, it is possible to forge them by acquiring Ibrahim's service in Checkpoint Rest Town so you can decide if you want to give the originals to Trysha or Myrddin, or search for additional original tomes to satisfy both quests.

This quest is best completed after Spellbound, since this will positively affect this quest after you deliver the tomes.

Let There Be Light: Located in Myrddin's Home, found on the desk upstairs. When stealing this from Myrddin, go through the balcony from the outside but not up the stairs from the inside. If he catches you, he will attack you on the spot.

Fulminous Shield: Purchased from Dudley in Melve [DD2 Map here]

4 the sorcerers appraisal side quests dragons dogma 2 wiki guide 600px

Nation's Death Knell: Found in Ancient Battleground, located northeast of the Checkpoint Rest Town. The tome is found inside a chest located next to a cenotaph within the castle ruins (still part of the dungeon). Warning: In each play through there are only two original Nation's Death Knell. If you already gave both of them to Trysha and Myrdinn, the quest Tolled to Rest cannot be finished, which will also influence the outcome of Off the Pilfered Path. It's better to give Myrdinn a forgery.

Howling Blizzard: Wendy from the Nameless Village wants to exchange the Howling Blizzard for a Fulminous Shield. However, you don't have to give her the original, because the collection will be incomplete and will force you to abandon the quest. Instead, ask Ibrahim in Checkpoint Rest Town to forge the Fulminous Shield and give it to Wendy

Towering Earth: This can be acquired by speaking with Waldhar after he moves to The Gracious Hand's Vaults (see The Caged Magistrate and The Heel of History)

Deliver the Grimoires

NOTE: Ibrahim is an NPC found in Checkpoint Rest Town. He can do forgeries for a fee, which is a copy of the original, but will not produce the same results as the original. Two NPCs seek the same tomes and for 2 different quests. The other quest is Spellbound, where a young girl named Trysha from Eini's Home aspires to harness her magick. Your choice will affect the results of this quest and you can get copies of the Grimoires so you can decide later on if you want to search for more original tomes or deliver the forgeries.

DD2 The Sorcerer's Appraisal Quest Objectives

  • Gather grimoires for Myrddin
  • Prove your friendship with Trysha
  • Revisit Myrddin in a few days' time

regaurdless if you use the item to get the spell trysna gives you or not

I ended up learning his spell immediately in my game, not entirely sure what did the trick, but I'll put it here to help people try figure it out. So in my game:
        1. I started Spellbound, which is what made me hunt down grimoires in the first place, but I did not hand any to Trysha yet.
        2. I made forgeries of most of the books, except for Nation's Death Knell, because I had two copies from both the Ancient Battleground and the Waterfall Cave
        3. I handed him 5 books total, but 4/5 were forgeries, the only real book was the Nation's Death Knell.

If I had to take a guess, maybe the number of books and adding real books to the mix would increase his affinity, and that would skew it towards a success?

I recently did the quest in ng+ and somehow it has a different dialogue due to:
          1. Im using sorceror and have meteoron equipped which he amazed and inquire what kind of magic is it, which led to answer that Trysha teach me;
          2. Myrddin will notice the Turqoise ring u received from Trysha (from 1st playthrough or you complete the Spellbound quest first before proceed with this quest), and asked you to revisit him in few days (i tried talking to him before and after clearing the Spellbound quest - no effect whatsoever in dialogue or quest), he just grateful for you to be the instigator and savior at the same time after asking Eini and quest concluded as Myrddin reconciled with you (lol).

Anyway, the reward is still the same, tho somehow Myrddin do realise how much his daughter miss him (sort of that way on how i perceived his dialogue) which im not sure whether it will has any impact at the end game or during unmoored world (hope it does affect somehow).

Before I took on Spellbound / this quest, I collected all 5 genuine grimoires and made 5 forgeries. Finished Spellbound as normal by handing in all 5 at once, got the ring, and finished that quest. Then, went to do this quest and handed in all 5 forgeries at once. Myrddin was not angry with me, and I got all his rewards as normal. I am wondering if he gets mad if you know Meteoron? It must be some kind of trigger, because I did not teach myself the maister skills before doing the quest.

As one anon commented below, there may be some discrepancy between giving him real tomes vs forged ones, but in my case, giving him 5 forgeries didn't seem to affect him. The outcome might be different, though, if you know Meteoron. Needs further testing.

Think the 'Real' vs 'Forged' Grimoires affect his attitude towards you and path that needs to be taken to get 'Myrddin's Chronicle' (Maelstrom)
If you give him 'Real' Grimoires, it is positive and give you rewards afterwards.

If you give him 'Forged' Grimoires, he has a negative attitude towards you and you do not get the rewards.
*unless* you happened to already completed the Spellbound (saving Trysha and learning 'Meteoron' AND have acquired the 'Turquoise Ring' from Trysha)
              * To which he asks you where you learned 'Meteoron' from.
-- If you Decline, you fail and get no rewards.
-- If you tell him, from Trysha, he does not believe you, and you need to have the 'Turquoise Ring' in you inventory to prove it. (You can go acquire the ring from your stash if you don't have it on you when you tell him of Trysha)
After showing him the ring, he still does not believe you and will inquire details from Eini. (To which, you need to rest a day and return)
After learning of how you helped Trysha from Eini, Myrddin will then reward you with the robe and Gold.
(This ended the conversation with him for me, to which he walked to me right after, engaging in dialog again)
And now with a 'Positive' attitude towards (After learning of you part with Trysha) he then rewards 'Myrddin's Chronicle' (Maelstrom).

I completed Spellbound first and gave 3 originals to Trisha.

I then save scummed the Sorcerer's Appraisal and gave him the same three forgeries.

So when you tell him nothing, you get partial rewards. Quest completed, but he is unhappy and you just get less gold.

If you tell him about Trisha but do not have the ring he is outraged and tells/gives you nothing, just kicks you out.

If you tell him about Trisha but have the ring in your inventory quest completes with full rewards & the spell.

                • Anonymous

So much bullshit information!! You HAVE to tell him about Trisha and give him her ring. I chose not to and I got NOTHING. What a waste of time.

                  • Anonymous

I gave him 2 real grimoires and 1 forgery and still managed to get all the rewards (after completing trysha's quest correctly and getting the appropriate rewards).
Why? I accidentally used both of the duplicate grimoires from the waterfall chest right away on the lich (went through the dungeon before knowing about the grimoire quests) so I was forced to complete the quest in this way

                    • Anonymous

I showed him the ring after doing Spellbound and he keeps telling me "Leave me. I shall hear word of my daughter from Eini, not from you." Do I have to trek half the map back to talk to Eini? This quest is so confusing

I'm wearing the courtly set and he won't talk to me. Came out, told me to go away and went back in just like he's done before. Is it because I also had headgear?

                          • Anonymous

this guy doesn't seem to care whatsoever what he gets. I just scammed him with 3 forgeries and still got the maister spell, so it's enough to just collect 3 books, scam this guy and keep the real ones for the other quest

                            • Anonymous

This guy is psychotic; he asks for Let There Be Light but my dude has it in his house. Is he riddled with dementia or does he not realize he's asking for the book he already has?

He wont come out of his home. I did spellbound and finished it. But i think because the game does not expect you to have made a copy of the books. He wont come out of the door to speak with him. I think i need to do spellbound half way....Come to him and finish him with the fake ones.. and then go back to finish spellbound.

I just did the quest by giving 2 original and 3 forgeries. He will give lesser gold but still give u the scroll mastery and the robes. I got 6k gold off him for it

If you do Spellbound first, make sure when talking to Myrddinn after handing him the forgeries to 'tell him about Trysha', if you refuse to do so the quest completes and you get NO rewards.

Rarely, Ibrahim will sell the real grimoire if you check his special finds. Only ever saw one in my first playthrough go through his shop so maybe some of yall can get lucky like I did

There is two Nation's Death Knell in the game so you don't need to make forgeries, i don't remember where the second one is, i had 2 when i went to submit it to myrddin.

I wasn't getting the quest from him until I switched to mage. So you have to have a class that has access to magic I assume. I know it's self explanatory but still it's a bit of info that I wished I knew before running around everywhere.
