Ring of Skullduggery is a Ring in Dragon's Dogma 2. Ring of Skullduggery increases the amount of damage the wearer deals to enemies while attacking them from behind.  Ring of Skullduggery Effect in DD2

This ring has the following effect:

  • Increases damage dealt by 20% when attacking foes from behind.
  • Two of these rings can be equipped at the same time, stacking the bonuses additively for a total of 40% more damage when attacking from behind.

The tricky part is to determine what counts as an attack in the back of the enemy:

  • Each enemy has an invisible panel (imagine a giant sheet of glass) traversing them, this panel is always standing vertical, and always facing in the direction that the body of the enemy is facing.
  • The game determines whether or not you are behind an enemy by your position relative to this plane, as such, standing behind the panel and hitting the enemy will give you the damage bonus.
  • The panel's axis is always centered around the enemy's midsection, so somewhere around the belly. This means that some enemies will have some of their body parts standing in the front section of the pannel, making melee arisens unable to perform back attacks when grappling and some other instances that will be discussed further. Taking the example of the Cyclops, which has his upperback and head hunched forward, grappling to the back of his head and performing attacks will not result in back attacks, since the arisen is forced towards the front of the panel, a ranged vocation can however perform a back attack on the head of a cyclops by using a ranged ability whilst standing behind the monster.

NOTE: In conclusion, the position of the arisen relative to the plane is the only factor in succeeding in a back attack.

Another case where back attacks can be impossible to achieve on certain body parts is when fighting an enemy that stands on four legs, such as gryffins and drakes. The axis is still placed towards the midsection of these monsters, and is still vertically aligned, as such, standing on the back of a such a monster, you will only be able to perform melee back attacks from the tail to the lowerback, ranged vocations standing on the lowerback section of the monster can still achieve back attacks on the rest of the monster.

The same applies to knocked down monsters: when a monster is knocked down, the plane is still placed and oriented in the same fashion as before, as such, standing on the shoulders of a knocked down cyclops will not allow for back attacks, and the horizontal position of the monster will follow the same rules as for a four legged monster, as discussed before.

Put two of these on while using the thief vocation's skullsplitter attack and you'll be absolutely shredding through large enemy's health.

all the weakspots of enemies are in the front.... face / dragon heart. except for lizards, but those are easy to kill anyways. so why should i use this, even 2 of them with 40% would not be better than hitting the enemy weakspots

        • Here are the results of my testing :

          - As mentionned on this page, the ring give you a 20% damage boost when hitting an enemy in the back, stacking to 40% boost whith two rings equiped.

The tricky part is to determine what counts as an attack in the back of the enemy, so here goes :

          - Each enemy has an invisible panel (imagine a giant sheet of glass) traversing them, this panel is always standing vertical, and always facing in the direction that the body of the enemy is facing.

          - The game determines whether or not you are behind an enemy by your position relative to this plane, as such, standing behind the panel and hitting the enemy will give you the damage bonus.

          - The panel's axis is always centered around the enemy's midsection, so somewhere around the belly. This means that some enemies will have some of their body parts standing in the front section of the pannel, making melee arisens unable to perform back attacks when grappling and some other instances that will be discussed further. Taking the example of the Cyclops, which has his upperback and head hunched forward, grappling to the back to his head and performing attacks will not result in back attacks, since the arisen is forced towards the front of the panel, a ranged vocation can however preform a back attacl on the head of a cyclops by using a ranged ability whilst standing behind the monster.
In conclusion of this segment, the position of the arisen relative to the plane is the only factor in succeeding in a back attack.

          - An other case where back attacks can be impossible to achieve on certain body parts is when fighting an enemy that stands on four legs, such as gryffins and drakes.
