Rothais is an NPC in Dragon's Dogma 2. Rothais was the founder of the Kingdom of Vermund, and was its first king. According to the tales of the Rivage Elder, Rothais was initially tasked with watching over the world from above but decided that he was tired of his duty, brought himself down to the earth, and later on created Vermund.
According to some recent translations, the existing English translations actually mislabel Rothais as the "King of Vermund. While it may be true that he was the first King of Vermund, it is incorrectly worded in the English translation. This is because in the original Japanese dialogue, the Rivage Elder uses the word: "Kaiou" to address Rothais.
Kaiou, can be directly translated into English as "World King". In the original Dragon's Dogma game, "Kaiou" was used as the title for the Seneschal. This leads to the fact that the Pathfinder, who seems to act the part as Seneschal, is actually a false Seneschal that is trying to hold the world together with a false cycle.

- During the events of Convergence, players will encounter Rothais within the Seafloor Shrine as they continue to search out answers about the Godsway.
Rothais Dragon's Dogma 2 Notes & Tips
- Rothais reveals that the Blue Crystal Shards used for the Godsway are fragments of the souls of Arisen that he's slain. He then uses his own soul to create the Dulled Godsbane Blade. This causes him to disappear indefinitely after you encounter him for the first time.
Anonymousthe bad english translation incorrectly titled this man as "King of Vermund." The Japanese word that was used is: "Kaiou" which translates to "World King". This is the same word they used for the Schensal in DD1.

The Japanese version outright calls this man the Seneschal.
But when you talk to him directly, he doesn't state he was once the Seneschal.
But reading this page makes me think about the Pathfinder and Rothais.
Rothais sorta broke the cycle by abandoning his divine post.
The watcher, or Pathfinder, continues to keep reality taped together via fake cycles, but also has sent many Arisen to kill the absentee Seneschal to restore the proper cycle (?)
Rothais realizes that the player Arisen has enough will to not only break out of the fake cycle, but also start the proper cycles anew.
