this game does a horrible job of explaining how to do it or know when it works. I can't seem to figure it out. It says "Press the activation button as soon as the charge is filled"

What is the activation button? I'm holding X (xbox) to charge it... do I press it again? Do I release it at the right time? Is it for charged special abilities?
