The Day and Night Cycle is a feature in Dragon's Dogma 2 that exemplifies the game's dynamism in the constantly changing environments where players will find themselves in. Throughout the player's journey, time will continue to pass regardless of what they choose to do or not do, allowing the Day and Night Cycle to continuously turn. Players have to keep this in mind as certain things only happen at night, such as monster appearances and attacks. Exploring during the daytime is recommended while nighttime journeys should be kept to a minimum. To better manage this, players can rest at Campsites, or even avail of an Oxcart to travel.

Day and Night Cycle Guide for Dragon's Dogma 2

As in the real world, time is constantly passing in this world, and night eventually comes. The night is shrouded in deep darkness, and without a source of light to illuminate your surroundings, finding your way will be a challenge. You will want to be well prepared for the perils cloacked by the dark of night.

Effects of Day and Night Cycle in Dragon's Dogma 2

In Dragon's Dogma 2, the passage of time is a feature that constantly affects gameplay. It directly impacts how the game feels as players witness the transition from the bright daytime turn into the eerie nighttime. In the day, everything's bright, so it's easy to see and do quests. NPCs are busy doing their routines, like giving you quests, managing their shops, or helping you. But when night comes, the environment gets more dangerous. It gets dark, and enemies increase in number and become fearless, making it harder to explore.

Aside from the appearances of nocturnal creatures, the passage of time will also bring about the respawning of resources and enemies. This applies to Ores, Flora, and various materials. Certain quests are also affected by time, like in Prey for the Pack where you must hurry to rescue Rodge before he gets killed by a pack of wolves. In some cases, if a quest is left unattended either by resting at camp, sleeping at an inn, or allowing time to pass, it will cause the quest to fail or be canceled.

How to Skip Time in Dragon's Dogma 2

There are a few reasons why you would need to pass the time. In some events, players will wait for a requested item, quest result, NPC interaction, and resource respawn. All of which requires the passage of time. You will find the options to skip time in Dragon's Dogma 2 below:

City Inns

Inns can be found in various towns that will let you access your storage and pass the time. Players can do this by interacting with the Innkeeper and then choosing whether they want to rest till nightfall or morning for a fee. This option will also save the player's progress as an "Inn" save file.

Taverns

Players will find various bars or taverns throughout the locations in Dragon's Dogma 2. They can also use this to pass the time either by "Buy a Round" or "Pass the Time". Both will have the same duration but buying drinks will cost about 2,000 G per round.

Benches

Benches are found across various towns and cities in Dragon's Dogma 2. Interact with a bench using the "Sit" command and then choose from one of the options that will be given to you. Unlike the other listed options here, benches offer more intervals:

  • Morning to Noon
  • Noon to Dusk
  • Dusk to Midnight
  • Midnight to Dawn
  • Dawn to Morning

Campsites

Campsites are fixed locations that allow the Arisen to set up camp using a Camping Kit from their party's inventory. This will allow them to rest and pass the time, interact with pawns, and cook meals.

Oxcart Couriers

There are 2 ways to pass the time using Oxcarts. The first method is waiting at the Oxcart station where you have the option to "Await Oxcart" and choosing this will skip the time where the Oxcart will arrive at the station. The other one is letting players the option to "Doze off" while taking the Oxcart to their destination. It is important to note that enemies often raids oxcarts and they can interrupt your journey.

Homes

A home in Dragon's Dogma 2 is the Arisen's private quarter that is acquired after completing the Quest: A Place to Call Home in Vernworth. They can use the bed inside the house to pass the time until nightfall, or morning, and for free! However, the quest requires the Arisen to pay 20,000 G to acquire their first home. In comparison, a night at an Inn costs about 2,000 G, while the upfront cost of paying for a house will be worth it in the long run. Players can also access their storage and receive gifts from the NPCs with whom they are highly familiar. There's also an optional house upgrade that players can avail of at The Noble Quarters by speaking to Salvatore which costs 200,000 G.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Night and Day Differences

As time continues to pass in-game, events and routines will continue to unfold. This applies to both living and non-living elements within the environments the players will explore, and elsewhere in the world. During the daytime, the world is filled with bright sunlight that enables exploration, NPC interactions, and tactical advantage. However, as the sun sets and the darkness begins to envelop the world, a heightened sense of danger becomes apparent as enemy activity is increased and vision is heavily reduced. The nighttime is the perfect atmosphere for enemy raids, stealth, and mystery which can affect the gameplay significantly. Below, you will find the differences between Daytime and Nighttime in Dragon's Dogma 2.

Daytime in Dragon's Dogma 2

Daytime offers an opportunity to travel and navigate the world in Dragon's Dogma 2. During the daytime, it is recommended to do quests within the reach of sunlight and outside the protection of towns and outposts. Here are some activities and notable events that happen in the day:

  • NPC Interactions: NPCs will go about their day and you can interact with them throughout the world. This also applies to merchants who sell in various towns and they are available to trade items, give quests, and provide insightful information about related events that can aid players in their adventure.
  • Exploration: The daytime gives better visibility which makes it easier for players and Pawns to spot enemies. Players can also navigate confidently and even discover treasures, secret passages, and various points of interest.
  • Combat Encounters: Enemy encounters are common while traveling in Dragon's Dogma 2, and the same can be said during daytime. However, there are usually fewer enemies and they are less dangerous like Goblins, Saurians, and such.
  • Questing: Certain Quests may only be available during daytime, or can only be done during a specific period of time. Some quests will require a passage of time to progress quests.
  • Environmental Changes: In addition to this, daytime can also bring about changes in the environment such as the appearance of certain wildlife or flora, and even weather changes. These can also affect the player's stats.

Nighttime in Dragon's Dogma 2

The biggest change that can envelop the world, however, is when the Day and Night Cycle passes and it becomes nighttime in the game. Players can expect the following general changes at night:

  • NPC Availability: Changes in accessibility of some NPCs
  • Darkness: As time passes, the world changes into a pitch-black dark setting which significantly reduces the visibility of enemies and the surroundings. Players can also use this to their advantage when doing stealth activities to navigate guarded areas.
  • Frequent Enemy Encounter: Higher Enemy spawn frequency and appearance of different, stronger spawns that pose greater challenges to players.
  • Quests and Events: Changes in the availability of Quests. Certain quests, events, and enemy encounters only happen at night. Enemies at night are usually stronger compared to the day creatures.
  • Atmosphere: More dangerous environments especially when straying from paved roads. Players will likely fall from cliffs and high areas if they're not carrying a light source like a lantern.

Exploring at night

Lanterns will be absolutely necessary to brave the dark night, along with other preparations against the increased frequency of difficult monsters. The nighttime in Dragon's Dogma 2 is similar to its predecessor and experiences the constant spawning of Skeleton, Zombies, and other undead Enemies. In return, the nighttime will prove to be a great place to gain more experience through the hordes of Enemies, and some Quests and NPCs will only be accessible during the night.

Enemy Encounters

Aside from the low visibility at nighttime, some enemies only appear at night. Their numbers also increase and their attacks become more frequent. Some of the nocturnal enemies that you will encounter are Phantasm, Skeleton, and Undead. There are also elite enemies like Skeleton Lord and Dullahan, which are the dangerous and stronger variants of the regular ones. These types of enemies can only appear at night, and thus, they make traveling at night much more dangerous. On the other hand, the Griffin is a creature that is active in the daytime, so you can be assured that you will not encounter this enemy at night.

To better manage the passing of the Day and Night Cycle, players can set up camp at Campsites to pass the time and travel faster through the night through Oxcarts.

Campsites in Dragon's Dogma 2

New to this sequel game, players will be able to set up camp in various spots throughout the world called Campsites. Players can only set up their camp on designated Campsites using an Implement called a Camping Kit. To do this, players need to interact with the campfire and then select the option "Make Camp" to begin. Then, the next screen will require you to choose any of the available Camping Kits from your party's inventory. Resting at camp will allow players to manipulate the in-game time by resting until nightfall or the next morning.  When nighttime gets too dangerous, players will have this option to pass the time and be able to explore at safer times, however, if you get attacked by enemies while resting, there's a chance that your camping kit will get destroyed. It is recommended to scout the area first and eliminate nearby enemies so you can rest peacefully.

In the event that your party gets attacked while resting at a campsite, all you need to do is to defend it from the enemies and then you can go back to resting. The campsites in Dragon's Dogma 2 will also allow players to cook meals, speak with Pawns, and manage their skills. For more in-depth information on Campsites and a list of all Campsite Locations, visit our page here.

The Oxcart in Dragon's Dogma 2

This Oxcart Courier is a new traveling feature for Dragon's Dogma 2 that allows players to safely traverse and navigate through the new world. When traveling to a Location through an Oxcart, players have the option to close their character's eyes throughout the ride to finish the ride quickly. This can be helpful when traveling at night so players can skip through the perils of nighttime as they try to get to their destination. However, Oxcart rides can also be interrupted by ambushes by monsters or bandits and the like, resulting in a conflict that players will need to resolve to continue their journey. Riding the Oxcart will cut time in traveling but it will not completely replace the use of Ferrystones and Portcrystals to fast travel in the game.

The new feature gives players a faster way to get to their destination, albeit with some enemy raids. With the Oxcart Courier, players will have more time exploring in the daytime, instead of spending it walking on the roads, allowing them to effectively manage their time in the game. Nighttime has one huge benefit over daytime: It's much easier to spot unique collectibles like gold beetles and seeker tokens, because they glow in the dark. I would recommend exploring an area during the day first, then returning at night to find all of the beetles and tokens you missed.
