Affinity Guide

What is Affinity?

Affinity is a measure of how much a given NPC likes you and can range in value from 0-300. Various actions can increase or decrease this value. Upon reaching a value around 200, NPCs may give you gifts at your home or give you escort quests. Their cheeks will also turn red from blushing when you speak to them. You will receive discounts when buying items from shopkeeper NPCs. Initially the discount is 5% but it can reach 10% at high affinity.  There may be other special interactions and dialogues.

How to Increase Affinity

Giving gifts and doing quests are the easiest ways to increase affinity. In order to increase the rate of affinity gain by 10%, you may choose to equip the Trickster augment Allure. You can also wear the Eternal Bond Ring for another 10% bonus. Eternal Bond can be acquired once you have collected a total of 120 Seeker's Tokens. Following is a list of known methods of increasing affinity and their values:

  • Buying a round for everyone at the tavern increases the affinity of those present by up to 30. It has diminishing returns when done repeatedly on the same night, but seems to always give 30 affinity when done for the first time each day.
  • Giving gifts that the NPC likes will raise their affinity by varying amounts. Generally, rarer or more expensive items will raise their affinity more. Commonplace gifts can raise affinity to 199, but you will need to give better gifts to raise affinity to 200 or higher.
  • Completing escort quests for an NPC provides a substantial amount of affinity gain.
  • Completing standard quests than an NPC is involved in will sometimes raise affinity, depending on the outcome.
  • Declining an escort quest raises affinity with an NPC by 10.
  • Frequently speaking to an NPC also seems to raise affinity, but this will not raise it higher than 199.

How to Decrease Affinity

Some players may want to decrease the affinity of NPCs for various role playing reasons. Here is a list of known methods to decrease affinity:

  • Unsheathe your weapon in the presence of the NPC to reduce affinity by 10. This can be repeated every few seconds.
  • If the NPC is below 200 favorability, you can pick them up and throw them to reduce affinity by 20.
  • Use the Plunder or Pilfer Thief skill while face to face with an NPC to reduce affinity by 30. Affinity will also be reduced for any other NPCs that witness the act.

What You Get For Increasing Affinity

You will be able to notice that the NPC will start blushing when you talk to them if you have gained high affinity. They will also leave gifts at your home upon reaching an affinity of around 200. If you reach max affinity you can carry the NPC without them struggling for an unlimited time holding them with both hands in front of you. For merchants, they will offer cheaper prices upon purchasing their wares. In addition, some NPCs will give you scrolls to learn Pawn Specializations.

For example, helping Flora complete her errand in Medicament Predicament will get you two gifts: A Merchant discount of 20% from Auriol (Flora's grandparent) and a Chirurgeon's Tome from Flora upon visiting their store in Vernworth. The Chirurgeon's Tome allows a pawn to learn the Chirurgeon specialization that lets them use curatives on the Arisen and other members of the party. If a pawn doesn't have this specialization, they can only use the items inside their respective inventories for themselves.

Can I Romance My Pawn?

While you can romance most of the NPCs and 2 major NPCs that have their own storyline and side quests, it is unfortunate that you are not able to romance any of your pawns. The role of pawns is to only assist you as the Arisen to complete your journey. Although, you can raise your pawn's affinity.

Pawn Affinity

You can raise your affinity with your main pawn, and you will find that they will behave differently around you. Such as having new idle poses, and have more lines that have more affection towards you as well as blushing. An affinity level of 620 will lead your main pawn to "fall in love" with you and be able to deliver special dialogue to the Arisen. However, this is only available after reaching the true ending of the game.

How to Check What an NPC Likes

In the game, there is a logbook that you can open to find information on the NPC such as the name, race, their residence, and the items they like. There are also pages for each NPC in this wiki where this information is listed. Understanding what each NPC likes will help you with your gift-giving strategies for NPCs you wish to romance. Once their affinity has been raised enough, they will exhibit blushing, like Ulrika in the picture below. As you progress, you can even unlock special dialogues and conversations with her, which will eventually prompt a romance quest.

The romance quests per NPC vary in Dragon's Dogma 2, but one thing they have in common is that it will all start with raising affinity before their quests become available, which also usually involves doing other quests. To learn more about how to romance Ulrika, please see Ulrika - NPC page.

For Wilhelmina, she likes Adorable and Beautiful Items. Gifting her the right items will increase her affinity or you may opt to do the quest Every Rose Has Its Thorn to unlock her romance quest.

Gift Giving and Romance

Gift-giving is the easiest way to increase affinity with NPCs you wish to romance. Giving gifts to NPCs will give you different kinds of benefits such as unique and different dialogue options, and discounts in various stores, or they will give you a gift in return to use on your journey or to place in your house.

As you progress your relationship with Ulrika, you will find her in your personal dwellings such as Vernworth. You will also get a special letter from her which invites you to spend some time with her.

How to Give Gifts

You can give gifts by interacting with the NPC you wish to give the gifts to and there will be a “Give Gift” option in the lower left of the UI. It will open your inventory for you to choose what item you wish to give. They might not like the gift so you have to make sure to give something they like.

How To Raise My Pawns Affinity?

You can raise your pawn's affinity but you can also decrease your pawn's affinity. Causing them to die often will lower their affinity. However, there are several ways to increase their affinity, each of these actions will also have a 10-minute cooldown before you can perform these actions to raise their affinity again.

The following actions will help you increase your affinity with your main pawns:

  • Talking to your Pawn: +2 Affinity
  • High-five your Pawn: +5 Affinity
  • Taking your Pawn to the Hot Spring: +10 Affinity
  • Picking your Pawn to be your beloved during the Sphinx Quest: +20 Affinity
  • Taking your Pawn to the Barber: +50 Affinity

Pawns also have Affinity, and there is a minor change (but pretty big emotionally) in the ending if you max it out.
Max is 1000 and Love state is 620. There seems to be a hard gate of 200 per session. So exit game and start up again.
      1. Talk with your pawn, each time +2, has cooldown of like 10minutes.
      2. Highfive with your pawn, each time +5, has cooldown of like 10minutes.
      3. Go to the hot spring, each time +10, has cooldown of like 10minutes.
      4. Go to the barber , each time +50, has cooldown of like 10minutes.
      5. Tested Sphinx quest gives +20
      6. Pawn death favorability will -25 each time
I didn't get any of this info on my own.

I never had once the option to "gift" anything to any NPC ever ... and i did one run through the endgame now in NG+ ... does one need to 'unlock' that somehow first?
