Benches have a red cloth and a lantern placed on a wooden bench and are used to wait and give you the option to doze off to skip to a specific time of day, whether it is to complete specific Quests or to find a specific NPC. However, some of the items in your inventory may also be affected by the slight time skip such as food. Passing a certain time will ripen the apple which will heal you more, but passing more time will cause the apple to get rotten and will poison you through the span of a few days if eaten.
