Preserved Medusa Head is an Implement type of Item in Dragon's Dogma 2 (DD2). Preserved Medusa Head is the severed head of a medusa. Cut from the beast at the height of its strength, its petrifying glare is nigh as potent as if it yet lived.

Preserved Medusa Head Use in Dragon's Dogma 2

Used to petrify enemies. Particularly useful for the quest A Case of Sculptor's Block.

How to get Preserved Medusa Head

Can be looted or dropped from:

  • Medusa - Special conditions: You get a Preserved Medusa Head from managing to cut off the head of the Medusa before it has lost one health bar. The best way to acquire a preserved head is by using the a Warfarer character with Magick Archer skill Sporofic Bolt and Warrior skill
Indomitable Lash. The strategy is to put the Medusa to sleep with 2-3 shots of the Sporofic Bolt, and once it collapses, immediately lopping its head off with a fully charged Indomitable Lash. Keep in mind that the time window is rather tight, so you may need to stay close to Medusa so you can immediately rush over when it collapses. To prevent your pawns from interfering, you can order them to wait outside or dismiss them. If you haven't unlocked the Warfarer vocation or have not advanced in the other required vocations enough, you may need to do this with a thief or fighter using thunder affinity and a low rank weapon; preferably with only one mage pawn as your other pawns will deal unwanted damage. Latch onto its head and keep attacking the neck.
  • It's important to take note that once you retrieve Medusa's Preserved Head, that this will have a chance to rot in your inventory. What we would suggest you do, is to immediately head back to Bakbattahl and store the head in your storage at Pilgrim's Inn. You may also make use of the Sorcerer Augment skill, Stasis, to keep it fresh for longer. Once you've stored the preserved head, it will not rot there.
  • If you withdraw it to your inventory and days pass, it will decay. It will eventually turn into a Withered Medusa Head which means it's already starting to rot. Let it stay longer, and it will turn into a Decayed Medusa Head which means it's already rotten and has no use.

You can buy this item for 5000 G at the following shops:

  • None Known

How to use the Medusa Head

  • In the Items menu, equip the head. You can then brandish it with the same keybind as the Lantern. Keep in mind that every second it's being brandished causes the head to decay. After a minute or so of use, it may wither and finally rot.

Can you try to fight Medusa again for the head?

  • Yes, it is possible to fight Medusa again if you fail to retrieve the Preserved Medusa Head. Just rest for 14 days in Bakbattahl and come back to her lair which is in Calignious Depths South of Bakbattahl.  [See Dragon's Dogma 2 Map]

Can you Petrify Medusa with her own head?

Yes, to petrify Medusa with her own head, defeat her with her health full and once you get the Preserved Medusa Head, store it immediately at Pilgrim's Inn and wait for 14 days. After 14 days, get the head from the storage and head back to her lair at the Caliginous Depths [See Dragon's Dogma 2 Map]. You'll find that she has respawned. Equip the head while in battle and brandish it, then point the head towards her, which will then petrify Medusa.

Alternatively, you can use the Daughter of the Evening shield to reflect its petrifying gaze to herself.

Players will get thebronze trophy ps5 wiki guide30pxGetting a Head trophy for doing this

I think I accidently found a decent cheese or just got lucky when going for preserved head and medusan bow.

Just standing on (not grabbed onto) her back, about a regular human's body length from where her snake body goes upright, she just kinda got stuck in a repeating animation where she sways around. Kind of like when she's winding up to throw someone who's grabbed onto her head right off.

I was using just thief vocation with bolts of blue + ring of derusion for stun and I got the bow while spaming basic slash while she just kept swaying around. Stun finally took, removed dmg nerf ring, draw and quartered her on the head, instant preserved head.
I told my pawns to wait out at the entrance which probably helped with getting her stuck animation loop.
I'm going to test more in the future.

once you have the head, give to your main pawn and sacrifice your main pawn to the brine, instant trip to the storage

A strategy that worked for me if you have lvl 6 Magick Archer and Warfarer:
Make your pawns wait outside the cave.
Use Soporific Arrow on her 3 times in a row.
Swap to Greatsword and use Indomitable Lash on her head.
This takes her head clean off with no extra damage taken!

Pro tip: If you wait until she starts doing her petrification vision, then chuck a rock at her face it'll stun her. After that simply walk up to her head and give it a good whack or two with your preferred bladed weapon. EZ game

I got mine very easily, like others said before me.
1 : Warfarer with Soporific Bolt and Savage Lash
2 : tell pawns to WAIT outside the cave and go in charging the bolt.
3 : I needed 2 shots, hide around the pillars, the bolt has auto aim don't forget.
4 : when she falls asleep, for me one charged perfectly timed Savage Lash cut it off instantly.

This is the easiest method I have found to obtain the preserved medusa head:
Step 1: Acquire the Wayfarer and Magic Archer Vocation
Step 2: Acquire Sleeping/Soporific arrow (skill) from Magic Archer vocation
Step 3: Equip the Wayfarer Vocation along with any Bladed weapon and Magic Bow
Step 4: Equip Soporific Arrow skill and if you want the Plunder/Pilfer Skill from the thief vocation if you have and want it.
Step 5: Go to the location of the Medusa and tell pawns to wait outside.
Step 6: Go to the Medusa and fire the Soporific Arrow (takes 1 charged shot for me, might be different based on your bow or other factors)
Step 7: (Optional) Go to the now sleeping Medusa and use the Pilfer/Plunder Skill
Step 8: Go to the head of the now sleeping Medusa and use your heavy attack with your bladed weapon. For PC players it should be ( v ) by default.
Step 9: Loot the now instantly killed Medusa and obtain your preserved Medusa head.

I wasted one hour scratching her damn neck and then I lost patience and finished her… I thought it would‘ve been smart to use that one ring from the sphinx-task that reduces damage to one and keep slashing but alas, it doesn’t work.

My Preserved Medusa Head turned into a full-powered Medusa Head (the same picture on this page) while I was trying to do a staring contest with Medusa to petrify her. Alternatively, you can get the full power right after you chop off the head by letting her use her gaze a few times and then you have it. Also, Warrior with indomitable lash are capable to one shot her if it hits the head

I just found this as a random reward in a chest outside the first big starting zone, Vernahl or whatever it's called. So it sounds like this is just meant to help some fights by way of petrifying enemies? Are there any specific enemies this is recommended to use on so I don't waste it? Also, since it's so early in game, will it just rot by the time I get to an actually difficult fight?

If you're a Warfarer. Just get Magick Archer vocation, rank them up till you get sleep bolt. Go solo and full charge it, she'll fell asleep immediately. Then switch to Dagger and heavy attack her head. Insta kill

In DD1 you could make the Blessed Flower last forever by leaving it in storage for 3 or 4 days to restore it's freshness. Does that still work in DD2?

so had a Preserved Head, and I haven't removed it from my storage so it wouldn't rot, but for some reason the head turned from Preserved to Withered and my other heads have decayed. Best reasoning is either, they still decay in the storage, or somehow leaving the unmoored (end game) and starting NG+ has made them rot..

Using the ring of derision I hit her head until she was face down then took the ring off and heavy attacked her head and it instantly came off
