Off the Pilfered Path is a Quest for Dragon's Dogma 2 (DD2). Off the Pilfered Path is not affected by the passage of time. It can be completed with no time constraints. There's an innocence and kindness towards a young member of the Coral Snakes, Hugo. Although he was captured and sent to jail, there may be an underlying secret that you can learn about that can shed light on Hugo's future. As the Arisen, you are to investigate more about Hugo and help him from making a decision that can ruin his life.

Though he yearns for an honest life, banditry is all that Hugo has ever known. Now freedom is within his grasp, but he knows not what to do with it. Perhaps you can advise him?

How to Unlock Off the Pilfered Path Quest in Dragon's Dogma 2

The quest can be picked up by talking to the head guard of the Bakbattahl Gaol, Ekratt. Players must first complete the quest Mercy among Thieves to progress a vital event revolving around a man named Hugo who has been sent to prison after being apprehended at the Coral Snakes' hideout. See Off the Pilfered Path on the [Dragon's Dogma 2 Map].

  • You may also start this quest by talking to Benjamin (the guard who raided the Coral Snakes' Hideout with you). Find him around Bakbattahl Oxcart and talk to him to start.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Off the Pilfered Path Quest Notes & Tips

  • This quest has multiple outcomes:
    • You killed Lanzo and recommended a job to Hugo.
    • You killed Lanzo and did not recommend a job to Hugo.
    • You did not tell Hugo what Brefft told you and you helped Hugo escape the prison.
    • Hugo is found dead at the Ancient Battleground, as well as Lanzo.
  • The best or recommended outcome for this quest is not telling Hugo the truth about his parents, bribing the guards to secure a peaceful release from jail for Hugo, and offering Hugo a job. He can work at the Rose Chateau Bordelrie or Isaac's Wares.
  • You won't be able to fully complete the quest based on the following factors:
    • If you help him escape the Gaol, this can potentially trigger the guards to attack him and he can die.
    • You helped him escape the Gaol safely and you don't offer him any jobs, plus you didn't tell him about the truth.
    • You helped him kill Lanzo but you didn't offer him information about where he can work.
    • If you told him what Brefft told you, his body and Lanzo can be found at the Ancient Battleground if you don't go there immediately or ignore the passage of time. The gist is to reach the location as fast as you can so you can fight Lanzo yourself.
  • Hugo can escape the prison in different ways:
    • You can bribe the head guard Ekratt with gold. He needs to be bribed 3 times across 3 different days.
    • You can use a makeshift gaol key to unlock his cell.
    • You can tell Hugo the truth after speaking to Brefft. Rest for a day and return to the gaol to learn that Hugo killed Brefft and escaped.
  • Hugo can work in different establishments if you offer him a job:
  • Some have reported bugs for this quest. It's recommended that you rest at an inn before you start the quest so you can reload safely and try the quest again if you encounter any problems
  • Some have shared that Brefft can be resurrected with a Wakestone if you want to acquire details on where to find Hugo.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Off the Pilfered Path Quest Walkthrough

Recommended Steps Before Starting the Quest

Off the Pilfered Path is one of the more complex quests of Dragon's Dogma 2. In this walkthrough section, we'll begin by providing recommended steps on what you should do before starting this quest. Please note that our walkthrough is based on our time and experience playing the game. Some have also reported that this quest has bugs and that it has multiple outcomes and ways to approach the objectives. We highly recommend that you rest at an inn before you start the quest so you can reload safely and try the quest again if you encounter any problems.

  • Step 1: If you want outcome 1, complete Tolled to Rest and complete Every Rose Has Its Thorn or Short-Sighted Ambition by giving Isaac the real grimoire. If you want outcome 5, you may be able to skip doing Tolled to Rest. We indicated them here as these are related to events that will tie in later with Hugo.
  • Step 2: Make sure you have the Battahl Residence Permit.
  • Step 3: Complete the quest Shadowed Prayers. You must apprehend the correct person which is the assassin (Herman) trying to hide and blend among the group of worshippers. That quest is time-limited, so you need to hurry and identify the assassin when you start Shadowed Prayers because it can cause the quest to fail. If you catch him, he'll be sent to jail at the gaol of Bakbattahl. Speak to him there and you can bribe him with 5000 G to gain information about the Coral Snakes.
    • NOTE: If you want to save money and gather information about the hideout of the Coral Snakes, you can do this by speaking to traveling NPCs by the main road of Battahl when you start Mercy among Thieves. One of them will help you pinpoint the location of the Coral Snakes' hideout.
  • Step 4: Complete the quest Mercy among Thieves. There is only one outcome for this quest, which will end with Hugo and Brefft being captured and sent to the gaol of Bakbattahl.

Pick up the Quest from Ekratt

Now that you've complete the previous steps, you can now pick up the quest by speaking to the head guard Ekratt, who's at the entrance of the Bakbattahl Gaol [See Dragon's Dogma 2 Map]. This quest can be difficult to do because many NPC trigger points are complex. Here is a route that hopefully covers the main points:

Enter the prison and talk to Hugo, who will send you off. The guard, Dietrich, will comment. Talk to Dietrich again after Hugo tells you to "Piss off". Now talk to Herman (apprehended from Shadowed Prayers) on the cell next door and pay him 5000 gold. Go to the bench by the Oxcart and doze off or sleep at your house, then if you talk to Benjamin he will tell you they got another snake. Now return to the Gaol and find the first cell on the opposite side of Hugo's, left from the entrance. This is Brefft, approach him in his cell and speak to him to acquire information about Hugo's parents and the Ancient Battleground. After you've spoken to Brefft and exhausted his dialogue, look for Hugo's cell and tell him what Brefft told you. This will cause Hugo to be silent.

Outcome 1: You killed Lanzo and recommended a job to Hugo

BEST/RECOMMENDED OUTCOME: Next, rest a day or pass the time, then return to the Gaol. You'll learn that Hugo has killed Brefft and that he escaped. At this point, do not waste time! Head to the Ancient Battleground [Dragon's Dogma 2 Map] and you'll find a man named Lanzo and other members of the Coral Snakes. After he gives a warning, he'll attack. Fight and kill him, and then a cutscene dialogue will trigger that shows Hugo arriving at the location who was planning on killing Lanzo to exact vengeance. But since you've already done it for him, he'll ask you if you know anything that can help him get a job.

Since you've already completed the "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" quest, you will have the option to tell him that you know a place and that you recommend him to work at the Rose Chateau Bordelrie in Vernworth. Keep in mind that you can offer him other jobs, which could be tied to specific side quests or tasks that you must first complete. If you do know any of these, please feel free to add them here. Moving forward, since you've told him about the brothel, after a few days, you can find Hugo working at the Rose Chateau Bordelrie in Vernworth.

Hugo can also be sent to work at Isaac's wares granted you've completed Short-Sighted Ambition and Isaac's shop in Bakbattahl has a note showing closed out front.

Outcome 2: You killed Lanzo and did not recommend any jobs to Hugo

If you didn't complete "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" quest nor the bad ending of "Short-Sighted Ambition quest" or any other known quest that could give him a job, the only dialogue option will be "Forget what I said" (you can also choose it among other options) and will make Hugo so mad at you that he will engage combat.

Outcome 3: Hugo is found dead at the Ancient Battleground

After a certain number of days, Hugo and Lanzo will have killed each other, though the quest screen will not update, still pointing you to the Ancient Battleground. If you go there, you will find that it's now inhabited by bandits, but you will not find Hugo or Lanzo, nor anything that will advance the quest.

Instead, the next time you pass near the ox cart station in Bakbattahl, Benjamin will inform you that he conducted a raid on the Coral Snakes' hideout and found only the two of them dead.

Outcome 4: You didn't tell Hugo about his parents, helped him escape, and didn't offer him a job

If you do not tell Hugo what Brefft told you about his parents, Hugo will not escape on his own and you will need to secure his release yourself. You can peacefully secure his release by bribing the head jailer, Ekratt. First, speak to the jailer in front of Hugo's cell to learn that Ekratt can be bribed. Ekratt can be paid 1,000 gold to secure Hugo's release, but he says it will take some time. Go wait a day and return to speak with Ekratt. He will tell you there have been some complications with securing his release and ask for another 2,500 gold. Wait another day and return. Ekratt will tell you he has secured Hugo's release and ask for a gift of 5,000 gold to show your gratitude.

Upon paying the 5,000 gold, Hugo will be released and ask you what he should do now. You will now have the option of offering him a job if you know of one, but for this outcome you must not tell him about any jobs. He will be mad at you but won't engage combat. He can be found later loafing around your house in Bakbattahl.

Note: You can also secure his release by unlocking his gaol cell, but this will initiate combat with the guards.

Outcome 5: You didn't tell Hugo about his parents, helped him escape, and offered him a job

You will now have the option of offering him a job. You can offer a job at the Rose Chateau Bordelrie if you have completed the quest Every Rose Has Its Thorn or a job at Isaac's Wares if you completed the quest Short-Sighted Ambition by giving Isaac the real grimoire.

Note: You can also secure his release by unlocking his gaol cell, but this will initiate combat with the guards.

you can get the Frosted Edges all the way at the end of the cavern from a chest in a tent, i thought you had to complete the quest to get them until i opened the chest and it said Frosted Edges i was like O my WOW lol

      • Anonymous

So I need to talk to Hugo, aaaand he is standing far away from the door, staring out towards the empty wall. I cannot talk to him. Attempting to open his cell to talk to him results in me being attacked.

        Bruh.

        • Anonymous

Well i seem to have no way to finish the quest because i missed the Wilhelmina questline and i gave Isaac the Forgery so he still runs his own shop.

So theres no jobs i can give to Hugo, and i cant finish the quest. And he doesnt initiate Combat with me like this guide says, he just gets a bit upset and walks off.

          • I like how that coral snake's name in the gaol is "Breft"; sounds quite close to the word "bereft," as in, that man is bereft of good morals.

            • Anonymous

Wonder if the best ending is instead going and killing Lanzo once you find his location and then going back to free Hugo. That way he hasn’t committed further crimes. That said though Brefft deserves to die

              • Anonymous

After having wasted too much time running back and forth from the jail to a spot to skip time following this walkthrough, it unfortunately stopped progressing, so I ended up opening Hugo's cage, grabbing him, and leaving. I got the money, exp, kerchief, and frosted edges.

                • Anonymous

Ok I screwed up. Hugo was always standing too far away from me to talk to him. I tried to open his cell and now the guards always immediately attack whenever I go there. Ive done all the reccomended quests thus far. Any advice?

                  • Anonymous

Has anyone noticed anything after reviving Lanzo at the morgue? Where does he go? Also I can't help but feel like this quest has a path where you help Lanzo and the coral snakes instead, as usually people involved in quests don't show up in Charnel Houses, like Lubomir. The coral snakes at the door of the battahl hideout have unique names, who also show up in the morgue, which is odd. Maybe try going to the Battahl hideout before getting Mercy Among Thieves and teaming up with the guard?

                    • Anonymous

I hadn't done the Wilhelmina or Issac stuff before starting this and by the time I noticed My last inn save was just before I checked the prison to find breft dead and Hugo gone.

I can confirm there appears to be no timer IF YOU DO NOT CHECK THE PRISON AND FIND OUT HUGO HAS ESCAPED.

I made a copy of that save just in case but went back to and completed all of Wilhelminas quests.

Ran to get my ass beat by Lance while I figure out trickster and after murking that guy Hugo shows up safe and sound

                      • Anonymous

Tried to do the quest before "Nation of the Lambent Flame", talked to the guard outside who acknowledged that I was sent to talk to the boy, followed the guard inside and promptly got attacked by all the guards.
I guess you have to look up every quest online first in this unfinished ass game.

                        • Anonymous

Something got severely screwed up here for me. Did "Tolled to Rest" long ago already. Talked to Brefft at the Gaol, told Hugo what Brefft told me, even spent 1000 gold to get him released, then got suckered into some time critical stuff and returned many days later first thing in the early morning after a rest at my house, while the quest marker was still at the jail. Guard tells me Hugo escaped and killed Brefft, the quest marker moves to the ancient battleground. I take the oxcart immediately, nothing happens on the way, I make a beeline from the border post to the top of the ancient battleground. The place is crawling with bandits, the quest marker is still there, but Lanzo does not show up where you originallly fought the cyclops. Neither does Hugo. What went wrong?

                          • Anonymous

Attention! if you want to get the guard to free Hugo, you must first talk to a second guard to the left of the cell who will tell you to interact with the head of the guards. At THIS point you can bribe Ekratt, otherwise he will make you wait days and days without him doing anything...

                            • Anonymous

Brefft appears after exhausting Hugo's dialog in the gaol cell, then waiting a bit.
Do tolled to rest and the other pre-reqs suggested, then keep talking to Hugo in his cell until he repeats the stuff about Lanzo doing an act. I then dozed off at the bench by the oxcart. Got up and Benjamin approached me saying they got another Coral Snake. Went back to the gaol and Brefft was finally there.
You dont need to wait for Herman to leave his cell, you might not even have to pay him, but I didn't test that.

                              • Anonymous

Beren is a trainer, who enjoys training new recruits (at least, the ones who want to learn).

Hugo needs training, and wants to learn.

The two seem to match up perfectly!

Yet I found no option to mention Hugo's situation to Beren. I tried speaking with Beren, several times, while this quest was selected as priority. Seems like Hugo would be just as enthusiastic as the recruit I brought to Beren earlier.

Strange that Beren does not appear to be another option for Hugo. ~ shrug ~

Isaac and his family continue to run the apothecary, after I completed his quest. He won't talk about Hugo, just as Beren would not.

So Hugo will be guarding Wilhelmina's ... house. At least he seems happy in his new job.

                                • Anonymous

Page is missing some infomation on Brefft methinks.

If you haven't seen Brefft in gaol yet. Speak to the would-be assassin, bribe him, then have him spill any beans he happens to have. Then, speak to Hugo and see what is up. Keep trying to talk to him and he'll eventually tell you why he is angsty and thinks Lanzo is tsundere.

ONCE you've done that, take a day to wait / sleep / shop / rescue bandits / slay women / romance goblins / etc.

Once you've had a day, approach the area near the oxcart 4-way intersection and Benjamin should approach you and tell you that another coral snake has been caught and is in the gaol. THAT is Brefft. Then go chat with him and he'll spill the juicy beans that you're looking for!

The guards keep attacking no matter what time it is, what I do and/or speak to. Hugo can jump off the cliff do all I care.

                                    • Anonymous

You don't need to complete Gift of the bow.
You just need to complete the Tolled to Rest quest at the Ancient Battlegrounds.
Then you need to wait a day at an Inn. You need to head back to the Goal where Hugo is at and down the hall will trigger a cutscene involving Breft.

                                      • Oh wtf the guard who says, “we’ll see if you can escape me a second time.” is talking to Brefft, not the Arisen. I thought he would get hostile if I kept going that way, but he just steps aside from the cell door so you can talk with Brefft.

                                        • Anonymous

There is a way to save isaac's family by giving him the fake copy of the book he wants. And thats what I did with that quest, so I don't know if my deed is going to cancel out that outcome job thing with Hugo. Just trynig to point that out

                                          • Anonymous

Man this quest is buggy. Quest marker at ancient battlegrounds, but the only thing there is regular coral snakes. No lanzo, no hugo, no cutscene.

                                            • Anonymous

So very important notes for people. I basically lost several hours worth of gameplay reloading older saves cuz I screwed up this quest and got Hugo killed TRYING to save him. But here's how you can still get the best ending for him even if you didn't complete the other preq. quests. You can actually complete them AFTER killing Lanzo and he shows up on scene and you have no places to suggest to him for work. He'll just stay up there at the Battleground as long as you mention that you DO have work him for him and then just say "Nevermind" when you don't. But he won't leave. So go complete 1 of the 2 quests mentioned. Come back to him and you can still give him a job, and he'll have different dialogue actually saying "You went out and looked for a job for me?" So yeah. The main point is once you free him or tell him the Truth about his parents, you have to kill Lanzo right away before 3 days are up, then you can still salvage the rest of his questline.

i had 2 differnt options, i could send hugo to myrmecelyon or whatever or issacs which is a quest in bakbahttahl i believe

I found this bug in my playthrough, after lanzo died, menella starts to attacking me but she has infinite health so couldn't kill her even throwing her off a cliff.
So had to reload ,this quest is bugged asf

So Hugo ran in while I was in the middle of the fight with Lanza and all the bandits at Ancient Battleground. All of my pawns were dead and I had picked up Lanza and was about to toss him off the roof. Everything just paused while the dialogue was happening and when it was done, I was teleported to the entrance of the ruins on the bottom level and the quest completed. All my pawns were bleeding out on the roof and I couldn’t get back up in time to save them, but I guess I still win? Lanzo was laying where I had been standing with him before, but all the other bandits disappeared.

Something unusual just occurred in my game: I was able to do, follow and successfully complete the quest even though it technically never really started for me.
A guard named Benjamin tells me that the snake lad is in prison, but this never started any quest for me.
I then just did it normally and was able to get the ending where Hugo inherits Isaac's shop and becomes a merchant in Bakbatthal, he thanked me, I got the rewards but I never completed the quest because I never got it in the first place.

                                                      • Anonymous

neat fact for me, breft doesnt exist. hes not in the gaol, hes not in the cemetary, hes not at the bandit place where i first found hugo and did the whole initial bandit quest. mans doesnt exist. hopefully hugo doesnt dissapear from prison and i can go do some sub quests to get him setup at least -.-

                                                        • Anonymous

This quest is broken AF, seriously. One misstep and you break it in half.
I guess I stopped following the Ekratt when I entered the guard side room, then I couldn't speak with him about the quest, a guard tried to kill me when I was looking for Breft, I opened Hugo's jail cell so I could speak with him. Waited a day and Ekratt started attacking me, I revived him and he just kept saying random stuff.
Hugo was gone, Breft was gone.
I'll go to the Ancient Battlefield and see if I broke the quest completely

So, i had an issue with Brefft not appearing even after completing the tolled rest. You have to complete shadowed prayers and apprehend the thief as the guide says. After that i bought the cheap 30k gold house from the npc in town and walked around a bit and a guard approached me saying that they've caught another member from the coral snakes which is Brefft.

I just open his cell, grabed him and run...

He stayed in front of my house on bakbatahl, till I finished the bordery quest and give him a job there

                                                              • Anonymous

Didn't complete this on my first run but on the second, I hadn't during this second run completed Tolled to Rest which seems to be a requirement for Brefft to appear in the gaol after talking to Benjamin the 2nd time, so had to complete that first and then rest before getting Brefft to appear.

                                                                • Anonymous

As far as rewards go, I killed Lanzo and then got Hugo a job, and received 7,000 gold plus the Frosted Edges and a White Leather Kerchief. Not sure how much exp though.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Kinda bugged. I have the residence permit and exhausted the dialogue with Hugo, paid the gaoler twice, waited, then tried to unlock his cell door while the guards were away to make a break for it or something but nothing happened. Then I came back a couple days later only for the gaoler to attack me along with the rest of the guards.

                                                                    • Anonymous

If you are looking to do get Hugo a job, before completing this quest, complete the quest Short Sighted Ambition. This will result in the item seller Isaac leaving Battahl and his shop having a sign say "Closed". After reading the sign, complete this quest and speak to Hugo about a job. You will be able to suggest that he works as the new item seller in Battahl.

                                                                      • Anonymous

I got Hugo out of jail and now i gotta find him a job, then i went to the seer and she told me to revive Dietrich, i revived him but i have no ideia where he is. If someone finds him tells us pls.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Far as I could find out there are at least two "paths" the quest can go either A) you break Hugo out of jail and then you need to help him find a job, didn't go this route so no idea what to do next or B) you talk to Brefft in a cell close by who will tell you that the snake gang are the child snatchers from my understanding and that they would kill the parents and then take in the children to raise as loyal gang members and is what happened to Hugo and his parents. If you inform Hugo about this he won't believe it at first and then go silent. Wait a day and return and you'll be informed that Hugo stabbed Brefft to death and then escaped you'll then get a quest marker to the ancient battlefield once I arrived it was now filled with snake gang members but I was unable to find Hugo so I gave up and a few days later I talked to the omen and she told me to bring Brefft back to life but once I got back I got informed by one of the guards that Hugo had now been killed so the quest was completed. My guess is that if you tell Hugo the truth about the snake gang he will kill Brefft. You then have to bring Brefft back to life to save Hugo or you have to actually find him in time in the ancient battlefield within x days or the snake gang finds him first and kills him.

                                                                          • Anonymous

So EVENTUALLY a guard will tell you theyve captured another snake whose more talkative and you need to talk to this guy instead. You cant do anything else till then just stuck with Hugo repeating dialogue.

                                                                            • Anonymous

I don't understand what is supposed to be done. He repeats the same thing over and over, and the head gaoler took money twice and did nothing

                                                                              • Anonymous

Question one of the other bandits that were caught by the guards, and he'll eventually tell you that their boss has fled to the Ancient Battlegrounds, along with a bit of Hugo's backstory.
The Ancient Battlegrounds will then be filled with bandits, with the Chief at the top of the castle.

For me, I killed the chief and Hugo appeared shortly afterwards. You could convince him to lead an honest life afterwards, and he'll ask you if you know there's a place that will take him in.
Unfortunately I have not come across any such place yet.

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous
